Today is the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is called 元宵节yuán xiāo jié. In China, the Lantern Festival is on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar New Year.
In northern China, they are called 元宵yuanxiao while in southern part they're named 汤圆tangyuan. Chinese people believe that the round shape of tangyuan/yuanxiao and the bowls in which they are served symbolize family togetherness.
