First of all, 5000 subs?? I still can't believe it honestly. I never thought we'd reach that milestone but it happened and I have you all to thank for it so THANK YOU. So many of the kind and encouraging comments you all leave has genuinely kept me uploading for this long. There are times I think about skipping a week or two but the positivity and enthusiasm I see in the comments for RPG Maker/game dev always keeps me going. I'll keep this post on the shorter side so let's talk about what I've been working on.
I spent a lot of time learning Ruby to make custom scripts in RMVXA and I did just that! I have, at least what I think, is a really cool battle system that mixes idle game combat with RPG elements. However, I'm currently working on retooling that as I don't really like the exploration side of it. I want to lean more into typical idle game mechanics like the core fighting mechanic and ditch the exploration, kind of like it was in the tech demo. I'll post the current version on my itch.io page (I'll link at the bottom of the post) soon. I've also been learning to use Godot!
The next Maker engine, Action Game Maker, will be built off/around Godot so I'm currently in the process of learning everything I can about how to use it so I'm ready to make tutorials when AGM releases. On a related note, I'm still VERY early on in GODOT but if you all would be interested in seeing "Godot tips, tricks, and tutorials for beginners" in Shorts form or otherwise, let me know! I've already made a very simple one level brick breaker game that's available on my itch and my next project will be a Space Invaders type of game. After that I may look into doing more devlog and longer form tutorial content as I really miss doing those.
EDIT: I wanted to mention I've also switched over to Linux for various reasons and no longer use Capcut as my video editor. If video quality has been a bit different or strange recently, I apologize. I'm currently working through learning the new video editor and the videos should return to a normal, consistent quality soon.
That's it! Thanks for making it to the end. Truly, you all and the support you've given me has been nothing short of incredible and much appreciated. Good luck in your game dev journey and can't wait to see what you all make!
Time for an update! First off, thank you for all the support! We're over 2k subs now which I just never expected to happen. It means a lot to me that you all take the time to view the content and I'm glad to hear it's helped some of you along your dev journey. I'm headed out of town for the next week on a vacation but I have two Shorts (one of which just released about a new RPG Maker) scheduled to go out while I'm gone as well as a Tip Compilation in long-form format.
Let's talk about the current state of the channel and the future for a second. I've scaled back the number of Create-A-Mechanics in order to work on Events For Beginners. The cool thing about the beginner series is that once we make our way through the fundamentals the series will be done and it'll be able to be referenced at any time in the future for new RM devs. Once we get through the core info then the beginner series will start to morph into a sort of Create-A-Mechanic for beginners and we'll start making stuff like movable objects and small puzzles. I think after that I'll look at branching off into an Advanced series where we start to build some more complex event flows. I'm not done with Create-A-Mechanic but it will take less of the spotlight in favor of the beginner series which I'm going to resume when I get back from vacation. Episode 3 will be about Event Triggers and Priority!
For anyone who doesn't know I stream my dev process for my current game (I'll have a link to my itch page at the bottom) and Twitch has recently announced it is going to allow simulcasting. This means I would be able to stream to a Twitch audience and a Youtube audience at the same time. If you all are interested in something like that let me know! Also, would you want to see those VODs as uploads on the channel to watch later or remain only within the streams? Any feedback is appreciated.
Again, thank you all for all the support. I want to see the RM community grow as much as possible and I'm happy to do anything to help foster that. If there are any particular topics or mechanics you'd like to see in a video please let me know. Also, here's my itch link for my current game Just Another Slime which is about 60% done. Have a great week! 💙
Just wanted to quickly say apologies for the lack of uploads over the past week or so. I've been super sick with something sinus related that has now morphed into a rough cough. With that being said my voice isn't exactly fit to record 😅 I'm hoping to be ready to make some more content within the next few days and catch up with a bunch of Shorts on tips. Well wishes everyone 💙
Wow. Just wow. 1k subs... never thought I would get to this point 😅 seriously though, you all have no idea how much I appreciate all the support for the channel. It's what drives me to keep creating content that hopefully you all will enjoy. I don't have anything crazy to announce at the moment, other than my commitment to bring you all tutorials and information on RPG Maker.
Still waiting for Unite to come to Steam so we can look at the types of tutorials we can make for that, but I've started a project in MZ which I personally have created all the pixel art assets for! I'm using this project to learn the art style, something I've always wanted to do, and it's been a real joy creating something like that from scratch. I'm creating it in the style of an original Gameboy game with the variations of green and it won't be anything crazy, but will hopefully bring you some nostalgia from the retro days. I'll try to have a preview of what I have so far up soon, but you can catch a glimpse of it in the newest Short that publishes on Friday.
Also, quick note, going forward I'll be uploading the project zip files for the Create-A-Mechanics so you all can download them and play around with the event flows yourselves. Sometimes it helps to see the event flow in front of you and for me personally, it's one of the best ways to learn.
Other than that I'm still streaming a lot of Retro, with a little bit of Destiny 2 mixed in, but mostly sticking to Retro and pixel art so if you enjoy that kind of thing then definitely stop by the Twitch channel and say hi. Lots of good people that hang out there, including some RPG Maker fans. Again, thank you all so much for the support and feedback. If you've requested ideas for Create-A-Mechanics I promise I haven't forgotten you, they are just very time intensive to both make and edit down. I don't really like uploading the hour plus videos that have a lot of dead air because I don't personally enjoy that. Much love and happy game making!
First thing's first, THANK YOU ALL! We're close to 1k subs, something I never thought would happen. RPG Maker content is still coming, still the focus, and I don't plan to change that at the moment. Though I will say, Diablo is taking up a lot of my time since it's new and way too much fun. Feel free to stop by my Twitch channel and hang out with some awesome people and good music! The next few things to come up will be the completion of the HM series with Fly (which I've put off for way too long) and a lot more Create-A-Mechanics that are outsourced from viewer comments. I refer to them any time I don't have an idea of my own or I think it would be something really cool and fun to do. The tip Shorts are going to be continuing as well and will hopefully be including RPG Maker Unite soon, or whenever it comes to steam. I try to stay somewhat consistent with at least two Shorts a week but for the next week or so Diablo might be dominating my time 😅 Again, thank you so much for the support and good luck in your RPG Maker endeavors!
500 subs! I don't even know what to say honestly other than THANK YOU 💙 plans for the channel haven't changed much. Still streaming as much as I can and trying to turn that into YT content, kind of like the HM series. HM Flash is up next and I have an idea cooked up on how to make that work but will it? I guess we'll find out! Working on the new roguelike 'Turn Zero' has been really fun so far, and there's a video dropping on Saturday explaining what that is and how the random event spawner works, even though some mechanics have already changed drastically since then. I still want to make more Shorts on useful ways to use certain event commands like Jump To Label, Show Picture, all the various things you can do with variables, etc. Still want to make other forms of content as well but I remain heavily focused on RPG Maker. Much love and thanks again 😁
We're getting closer to 500 subs, thank you all so much! I'm still really enjoying creating RPG Maker content and I have plenty ideas for more Shorts and Create-A-Mechanic videos. Things like Double-Cut Materia from FF7, shop discounts, how to create randomized loot chests, more puzzles, the list goes on. I'm open to any suggestions or mechanics you would be interested in seeing recreated through Eventing! I have a really good foundational plan for Your Turn which was our RPG Maker Roguelike that I pitched awhile back so keep your eyes out for Dev Diaries relating to that project in the near future. I'm also going to start pushing regular variety stream content highlights into Shorts as well and potentially highlight compilations in long-form videos to increase awareness and exposure for the Twitch side of things. If you're only here for the RPG Maker content I totally understand and I appreciate you, that content isn't going anywhere! You'll just start seeing a bit more of variety clips in the feeds. Thank you for everything!
Thank you all so much for 300 subs! It means a lot to me and I plan to continue making RPG Maker content for the foreseeable future, with other types of content sprinkled between. I'm pretty content with the current trajectory of the channel, especially the shorts which seem to do well. The only thing I want to do differently is increase the cadence of non-short videos to one a week or one every other week instead of sometimes longer like it has been. One way I've been thinking about doing this is doing more RPG Maker streams on Twitch and uploading those as Dev Diaries for the YT channel. I'm starting to realize more as I go along that the ambition of making a game feels nice but my heart is in eventing and making different systems, or recreating systems from other games as we have been. I may upload Twitch streams of me actively putting these systems together, so you would get those along with the final finished and cut video for Create-A-Mechanic as well. Food for thought! Definitely let me know what you think of the content lately, what you like or ways I can improve, and most importantly thank you for watching! 😁
Time for another update! I've got a few scripts already prepared for the next few shorts that will be rolling out over the next week or so and I'll be finishing those edits within a couple of days. I'm also going to finish Create a Mechanic 3, which will be covering how to make a puzzle where switches must be pulled in a particular sequence, by Monday. For any who don't know, I'm a HUGE Destiny 2 fan and a major expansion (Lightfall) launches on Tuesday so I want to have some RPG Maker content ready to automatically publish while I'm enjoying that. I know it's been a bit since I've uploaded a Dev Diary but I'm planning to get back to that after I get my fill of Lightfall. There's been no shortage of ideas for plot and mechanics living rent-free in my brain, I just need the right energy and mindset to sit down and get another really good few sessions in. I'll also be getting back to the LPs as well at that time (which are a great source for mechanics to recreate in RPG Maker). Thank you all for the support!
As a side note, I've always wanted to get into creating content for D2 but I want to do it in a unique way, not just copy the same format and video topics everyone else is. Still brainstorming about that one!
Thank you all for taking time to post feedback in the comments! I've seen a particular sentiment a couple of times so I just want to explain the reasoning. No salt or disrespect or anything like that, just want to set expectations for the channel and content. To heavy or long-time users of RPG Maker a lot of my tip videos seem like they are obvious pieces of knowledge and that's fair. IMO, the onboarding process for the engine isn't what I think it could be. You've got the help files I guess and online communities, the tooltips are actually super helpful, but there's a lot that I feel it does a poor job communicating to the user (which a lot of advanced software does). A lot of my tips are geared towards somebody new coming in, or a lapsed user like myself who uses the engine off and on between major revisions. My goal is to help build some foundational knowledge for new users and hopefully spark some creativity and inspiration along the way. Thanks for the all the support, it means a lot!
