August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012.
There are singers we enjoy, and then there are singers whose voices become attached to moments in our lives. Whitney Houston is one of those artists for me.
Of course I love classics like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and I'll always love hearing Whitney and Mariah Carey together on “When You Believe.”
But two Whitney performances have always hit me differently:
🎶 **“All the Man That I Need”**—a love song that I've always been able to hear through a spiritual lens. Something about Whitney's delivery makes me think about being completely filled by God's love.
🙏🏾 **“I Love the Lord”**—from *The Preacher's Wife*. THAT song helped carry me through some difficult times while I was living in New York.
That's the power of a great voice. Decades later, it can take you right back to where you were, what you felt, and sometimes what you survived.
I wish Whitney were still here to see the generations of vocalists she influenced.
But I'm grateful that I got to experience her brilliance while she was here.
