Did the Vedas actually describe the Shiva Lingam?
Most people assume the answer is obvious.

The Rigveda and other early Vedic texts speak of Rudra.
The Atharvaveda speaks of Skambha—the mysterious cosmic pillar that supports and contains the universe.

And much later, the Linga Purana describes an infinite pillar of divine fire that Brahma and Vishnu could not find the beginning or end of.

So are these the same idea?

In Rigveda 1.154, Vishnu is the wide-striding cosmic deity who measures the worlds in three great steps.
His most famous feature isn't blue skin.
