Trinidad and Tobago traveled very different colonial paths before Britain joined them administratively in the 19th century. And even then, the country we know today wasn't necessarily destined to become independent on its own.

For several years, Trinidad and Tobago was part of an ambitious experiment to create a federated West Indian nation. When that project unraveled, the road to independence changed dramatically — and quickly.

So for Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day, we went a little further back.

Born enslaved in Saint-Domingue, educated against the odds, and forged by a revolution that changed the world, Toussaint helped create the conditions that allowed Haiti to become the world’s first free Black nation.

This series illuminates the stories of the Architects of the Haitian Revolution — the thinkers, fighters, strategists, and leaders whose choices reshaped the Caribbean and challenged empires.

We begin with Toussaint Louverture: soldier, strategist, diplomat, and one of the most consequential figures in modern history.
