How do you get your friends to put the technology away and actually play?"

Why is your friend stuck on the screen?
Technology (especially YouTube) is designed to be "sticky." Apps use algorithms to show you one video after another that they know you’ll like.
The "Trance": Sometimes people get so sucked in that they actually forget there is a real person sitting right next to them.
It’s not personal: Usually, they aren't trying to ignore you because they don't like you; they’re just stuck in a "digital loop."
How to handle the situation
Since you're 11, this is a great time to practice standing up for your own time. You don't have to just sit there! Try these steps:
The "One More Video" Rule:
Instead of getting mad, try saying: "Hey, can we watch just two more videos and then go outside/play with LEGOs/play a board game?" It gives them a chance to finish what they are doing without feeling attacked.
Speak Your Truth:
Be honest but kind. You could say: "I came over because I wanted to hang out with you. I can watch YouTube at my own house. Can we do something together?"
Bring an Alternative:
Sometimes friends stay on tech because they can't think of anything else to do. If you show up and say, "I brought my football, let's go hit the park," it might break the spell.
A Note on What Google Said
You’re right—spending all day on tech isn't great for your brain or body. But the biggest "negative outcome" in this specific moment is that it’s hurting your friendship. Friends are supposed to be people we interact with, not just people we sit near.
The Golden Rule of Hanging Out: If you invited a friend over, the best "technology" to use is the kind you play together (like a multiplayer game), rather than just watching someone else live their life on a screen.
Next time you head over, maybe suggest a "No-Screen Hour" right at the start. If they still won't put the phone down, you might want to spend more time with friends who are ready to actually play!
