The Story of Colonel Sanders: Turning Rejection into Success
Harland David Sanders, famously known as Colonel Sanders, was not always a success. He was born in 1890 in Indiana, USA. His father died when he was just 6 years old, and his mother had to work long hours, leaving young Harland to cook and care for his younger siblings.
At age 16, he dropped out of school. He tried several jobs—farmhand, streetcar conductor, railroad fireman—but was fired from most of them. By the time he was 40, he had already faced countless failures.
One day, he started cooking fried chicken for travelers at a small service station in Kentucky. People loved his chicken because of his secret recipe with 11 herbs and spices. He thought he could sell his chicken recipe to restaurants across America.
At 65 years old, when most people are thinking of retirement, he packed his car and started traveling from city to city to sell his recipe. He was rejected 1,009 times! But he never gave up. On the 1,010th try, a restaurant agreed to partner with him. That’s how Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was born.
Today, KFC is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world.
Lesson to Learn
Age is just a number – It’s never too late to start.
