📸 Caritas Gambia Inaugurates Two Toilets at St Francis School in Kunkujang Mariama
The Catholic Development Office (Caritas-Gambia) inaugurated two new toilet buildings at St Francis Junior and Senior School in Kunkujang Mariama Village on 2nd August 2024. Speaking at the inauguration, Principal Mr Sang Marie Correa thanked Caritas and their partners for their support. He highlighted that “clean and decent toilets are a basic need for us [and] toilets like this [are] very important for [our] health [and] the environment”.
According to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s National Strategy for Sanitation and Hygiene “in terms of toilet availability, the median pupil: toilet ratio was 97:1. While efforts are made to maintain cleanliness, many facilities are closed due to poor maintenance of the infrastructure”.
The school provides for students within Kunkujang Mariama from Junior level to the Senior Secondary School level.
Speaking to two of the students, Mathias Kundeh and Aminata A. Jallow, who also doubles as the Environment Minister, they welcomed the development, noting that the new toilets will contribute to improved hygiene of the school environment and help eradicate the bad odour experienced in the older toilets.
The Director of Caritas, Mr Francis Dominic Mendy, who facilitated the construction of the toilet highlighted that refurbishment of the toilets to standard was possible because of the funding secured from the “JOBCULB an organization that supports refugees in Germany”.
Caritas is a charitable organization that has rendered and continues to support schools across the country in various ways, including and not limited to providing bicycles to students who would have to walk hours to school without their intervention.
FACT-CHECK: Have Taxes Increased Under GRA in 2024?
Besides a number of other service fees which are set to increase that are outside the jurisdiction of the GRA, its clear that other taxes directly under the purview of the GRA have already been increased for the year 2024.
The tax increases which are under the purview of the GRA will affect rental income, gambling, alcohol, cigarettes, used cars and flour.
Based on our research, the GRA Commissioner General’s claim there are no tax increases in 2024 is FALSE and MISLEADING.
