Dark Rifles Battalion Builds Readiness Through Training, Modernization During Annual Training

Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, 81st Mobile Brigade Combat Team, completed an ambitious annual training period, June 13-27, 2026, that combined demanding tactical training, leader development, equipment modernization, and expert badge testing to prepare the battalion for future missions.

“The Dark Rifle’s completion of Expert Infantryman and Expert Soldier Badge, expansion of the Dark Rifle Academy, and continued transformation efforts reflect our commitment to disciplined excellence, leader development, and shared understanding of how we fight,” said Lt. Col. Josh Brown, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment.

As part of the train-up for next summer’s National Training Center rotation, the battalion conducted platoon and squad-level tactical operations while simultaneously advancing multiple modernization efforts.
“We are reinforcing our commitment to building a lethal, adaptable force prepared for large-scale combat operations,” Brown said.

One of the battalion's signature events was the continued expansion of the Dark Rifle Academy, a leader development initiative focused on strengthening team and squad-level leadership. More than 100 soldiers participated in classes designed to improve tactical proficiency and build shared understanding across the formation. The training cycle also emphasized individual mastery. Twenty-one soldiers from the battalion earned either the Expert Infantryman Badge or Expert Soldier Badge during the 81st MBCT’s E2B testing event, demonstrating technical proficiency, physical fitness, and tactical excellence. The testing included more than 640 candidates from across the region, including soldiers from every battalion in the 81st MBCT. Soldiers also conducted helocast training with 1st Squadron, 303rd Cavalry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 168th General Support Aviation, expanding their ability to infiltrate and operate in challenging environments.

“These achievements strengthen individual mastery, cohesion, and adaptability as we build a learning, lethal and confident team ready to win,” Brown said.

Another major step for the 3-161st Infantry is the continued modernization and transformation of their formation. During annual training, the battalion incorporated emerging technologies into training with 22 soldiers completing new equipment training on the Bumblebee, a small unmanned aircraft system, learning assembly, operation, as well as day and thermal reconnaissance techniques. Another 71 soldiers qualified on the new Infantry Squad Vehicle, increasing the unit's mobility capabilities. Beyond field training, the battalion executed a significant logistical effort, completing two armory moves, transporting equipment across approximately 3,000 miles, turning in 150 major end items valued at more than $150 million, line-hauling 72 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicles, and preparing 22 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for final maintenance and transition.

“We completed major transformation tasks that included stationing two companies and are ready to transition to individual and collective qualifications and collective exercises in September,” Brown said.

The accomplishments of this summer’s annual training reflect the battalion's continued focus on disciplined excellence, leader development, and building a learning organization capable of adapting to future operational requirements.

“By investing in soldiers, embracing modernization and mastering the fundamentals, the Dark Rifles continue to strengthen the readiness needed to support both state and federal missions,” Brown said. “We remain an organization people want to be a part of and an organization that will prioritize people and win at the National Training Center.”

U.S. Coast Guard reopens Port of Tinian to daylight operations, VHF comms remain limited

SANTA RITA, Guam — The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands reset a modified Port Heavy Weather Condition (PHWC) WHISKEY for the Port of Tinian, effective at noon ChST on Friday, July 10, reopening the port to daylight-only commercial traffic and cargo operations. All operators must coordinate operations with the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

Following assessments Thursday and Friday, including work by an aids to navigation positioner deployed with the USCGC Myrtle Hazard (WPC 1139) to determine positions, the COTP was able to partially lift restrictions, restoring maritime commerce flow to Tinian.

Simultaneously, crews restored connectivity to the Mt. Alutom communications tower on Guam with the help of a FEMA generator, improving VHF coverage in part of the region. The towers on Rota and Saipan remain offline. Additionally, the team at the Rota Emergency Operations Center informed the U.S. Coast Guard that the VHF tower on Rota was damaged by Super Typhoon Bavi, further limiting near-shore VHF radio coverage.

“My thanks to the team and partners for the coordination as we reopen ports across the Marianas, enabling the maritime flow of critical supplies,” said Capt. Jessica Worst, commander, U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam and Captain of the Port Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. “As heavy weather conditions subside and people begin to take to the water, I cannot overstress the importance of taking multiple forms of communication and letting someone on shore know where you are going and when you will be back. We have significant VHF communications outages across the islands. Our team is working to restore coverage, but many of these solutions require equipment from off-island, and it will take time.”

The U.S. Coast Guard is coordinating with the Port of Guam and the Commonwealth Ports Authority to fully assess the ports, address already identified hazards as well as new issues. Multiple navigational aids are reportedly discrepant, off station, or simply missing. The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Broadcast Notice to Mariners and reminds all operators to exercise extreme caution when transiting waterways as restoration efforts continue. Three things the U.S. Coast Guard continues to ask of the public:

Report any emergency on VHF Channel 16 or by calling 911. Social media is not monitored for distress. Significant VHF outages persist, so carry more than one way to call for help.
Trust official sources for reopening and safety updates: NWS Guam, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, and the CNMI EOC State Warning Point.
Stay out of the water and off jetties, piers, and docks. Dangerous surf, rip currents, and hazardous seas persist with advisories in effect through Friday afternoon and may be extended as needed. Even as conditions improve, extreme caution is advised as responders continue to work storm recovery efforts.

BOSTON – The U.S. Navy announced the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Arlington (LPD 24) arrived in Boston Harbor to serve for the historic Sail Boston 2026 event. The ship's arrival marks the formal beginning of Sail Boston, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

USS Arlington is the primary host for senior military leaders, global dignitaries, and historic ceremonial events throughout the week. Mooring at Black Falcon pier, the warship stands as a visible symbol of modern Naval power, offering the people of Boston an up-close look at a ship uniquely tied to the nation's history.

Layer by Layer: USS Essex Incorporates 3D Printing

Replacing parts or tools at sea is not as simple as ordering replacements and having them delivered. Some items can take weeks to arrive, or they may no longer be made. Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) and Combat Logistics Battalion 13, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are addressing supply chain challenges by using embarked 3D printers, providing our team with additive and subtractive manufacturing capabilities.

RIMPAC 2026 will feature approximately 40 experimentation initiatives, each with a respective Department of War or Department of the Navy sponsor, as part of the Fleet Experimentation Program (FLEX). Experimentation initiatives will be conducted during all phases of RIMPAC execution, including while units are pierside, underway, and aboard U.S. Navy and partner nation units. By exposing the Fleet to emerging capabilities, RIMPAC enables experimentation, providing stakeholders real-world warfighter feedback early in the acquisition process.

“We’re able to manufacture parts on site at the point of need,” said Gunnery Sgt. Samuel Margarini, 3D Printing Team non-commissioned officer in charge, assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 13, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. “Whether it’s for the ship, the Marine Corps, or aviation, we’re able to solve problems without waiting on the supply chain.”

Though this capability currently does not solve all supply chain issues, it does break away from traditional manufacturing.

The processes of additive and subtractive manufacturing build or remove material from an object layer by layer from a digital model. The process begins when parts or product specifications that require a replacement are brought to the 3D printing team. The team then measures, designs a digital model, and prints a plastic prototype to verify the dimensions before producing the final product. More complex parts require technicians to use a 3D scanner to capture detailed measurements for digital recreation.

According to Margarini, technicians use plastic prototypes—quicker to make than metal ones—to test design concepts before finalizing products. This streamlines confirmation of precise measurements and fit, saving time, reducing waste, and enabling design refinement before installation.

“The traditional process requires a department to submit a job and the supply department to track, receive, and issue parts," said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jason Pirrallo, the supply officer aboard Essex. "This capability enables the entire manufacturing process to occur on the ship, reducing administrative hurdles and the time from job submission to receipt of parts."

For the ship’s Supply Department, 3D printing provides another tool to keep Essex mission-ready.

Pirrallo states that the 3D printing program has reduced the workload on parts orders and saved money across all departments, freeing funds for other essential priorities.

“If we’re in the middle of the ocean and something breaks, instead of waiting a week or two for a replacement, we’re able to get our equipment operational right there,” Margarini said. “There are many parts on ships that are no longer manufactured. Some manufacturers no longer exist, and some parts are simply obsolete. This technology helps supplement the supply system and keeps equipment operational.”

One of Essex’s mission sets is to operate as a forward-deployed medical ship and provide humanitarian aid during a crisis. Because of this, it is essential that medical equipment is readily available.

U.S. Navy Capt. David Foster, senior medical officer aboard Essex, notes that their equipment often consists of low-volume, high-acuity parts that can be easily produced by the 3D printing team. The team has already manufactured replacement room thermostat covers and oxygen storage parts that are unavailable for purchase.

“In the future, we’re hoping to manufacture actual pieces of medical equipment that could then be sterilized and potentially used with patient care,” Foster said. As more departments learn about additive and subtractive manufacturing, the program will expand. It will become more than just replacing broken parts. This tool lets Sailors and Marines solve problems on their own instead of waiting for outside help.

“I think a lot of people still don’t fully understand the capabilities,” Margarini said. “The more people understand the technology, the more you can push and challenge the technology and help advance it.”

By producing replacement components, custom tools, or solutions for ship departments, 3D printing keeps Essex ready at sea, one layer at a time.

Thirty nations, over 30 surface ships, five submarines, 15 national land forces, more than 206 aircraft and 30,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC in and around the Hawaiian Islands, June 24 to July 31. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2026 is the 30th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

III MEF successfully intercepts aerial targets with Medium-Range Intercept Capability system

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP BLAZ, Guam– U.S. Marines from III Marine Expeditionary Force successfully fired the new Medium-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC) system June 30, 2026. As part of Exercise Valiant Shield 2026, one of the largest multi-domain exercises in the Pacific, the test highlights a core theme of this year's exercise: integrating cutting-edge technology to maintain a decisive military advantage and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific. The successful intercept of an aerial target proved that the joint force is not only training with existing tools but is actively fielding and validating the next generation of technology required for regional security.

The MRIC represents a significant leap in operational capability for the Marine Corps. Designed to counter advanced aerial threats, the system provides a highly mobile, resilient, and effective air defense shield for forward-deployed forces. The MRIC is designed for the expeditionary nature of Marine Corps operations; its mobility ensures that as forces maneuver across the Pacific theater, their air defense umbrella moves with them. During Valiant Shield 2026, this capability was tested in a simulated all-domain warfare environment, proving its effectiveness as a critical component of the broader U.S. Pacific Command strategy to deter aggression.

“Before the MRIC, we were primarily a short-range air defense capability,” said Maj. Emi Gutierrez, commander of the firing battery. “The Marine Corps employed the Stinger for years, but that capability is significantly different. With the evolution of air defense weapon systems, we saw a need to adapt.”

The MRIC fills a gap in Marine Corps air defense by bridging the Stinger Man-Portable Air Defense System and long-range Patriot missile system. This added layer of defense is essential for units that need to maneuver inside an adversary's weapons engagement zone. The system’s ability to rapidly deploy allows for the defense of critical assets like expeditionary air bases, runways, and forward arming and refueling points.

“Our ability to rapidly insert and fill critical gaps within an integrated air defense system is critical not only to the Marine Corps but also the joint force as a whole,” said Gutierrez. “The MRIC fits into expeditionary warfare perfectly because of its ability to be rapidly deployed.”

Validating a next-generation system like the MRIC required a modernized environment capable of supporting complex, multi-domain training. For this historic live-fire event, III MEF used the newly activated ranges at Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz on the northern coast of Guam. Additionally, Joint Region Marianas provided 12.5 miles of range off the coast to allow for the MRIC interceptor to engage its target.

“Valiant Shield allows us to operate in the second island chain,” said Master Sgt. John Lukasiewicz, an operations chief. “The joint force across Guam has been supportive during the whole exercise. Camp Blaz allowed us to use their ranges in a non-traditional way. It is the best way to execute this mission because of the safety measures that they provided.”

As the newest Marine Corps installation, Camp Blaz is specifically designed to host and sustain advanced training operations like those seen in Valiant Shield 2026. Hosting the MRIC live-fire demonstrates the installation's critical role as a hub for joint force readiness and Force Design modernization west of the International Date Line.

“The Marine Corps hasn’t had a brand-new base in 72 years,” said Dr. Monte Powell, operations officer for Camp Blaz. “We have the opportunity to provide a modern forward operating facility with ranges and training facilities for Marines and joint forces who are forward-deployed.”

While modern facilities like Camp Blaz provide the necessary environment for these tests, the success of the MRIC relies entirely on the knowledge and expertise of the Marines who operate it. Being the first to field a new weapon system requires rigorous training and adaptability. The Marines of III MEF spent nearly two years mastering the MRIC’s advanced radar, command and control interfaces, and interceptor protocols to prepare for this event.

“It helps us with an extra layer of defense with something in front,” said Sgt. Nicholas Hulitt Jr., one of the main operators of the MRIC. “It allows us to defend against the current warfare threats that we see with drones and missiles.”

Fielding a new system like the MRIC presented various challenges with adapting to the new technology. The Marines spent two weeks at the range on Camp Blaz refining their procedures to ensure a successful launch.

“The Marines have been practicing setting up and tearing down long before they arrived at the range,” said Lukasiewicz. “Now they are refining the movements, timelines, and communication pathways to allow that interceptor to leave the canister and engage the target.”

The mastery of these complex systems represents a fundamental shift in the capability of the Marines operating them.

“These Marines have gone from being known as just low-altitude air defense to ground-based air defense professionals,” said Gutierrez.

Integrating the MRIC was not just about testing a new piece of equipment, it was about integrating the Marines of III MEF into a massive, multinational joint force as part of Valiant Shield 2026. The exercise required seamless communication and coordination between the MRIC operators on the ground and broader aerospace control networks.

“We have continued to evolve,” said Gutierrez, “and therefore our Marines have become smarter, faster, and better with these weapon systems. Their skills grow, and the overall capability of the ground-based air defense community grows.”

With the conclusion of Valiant Shield 2026, the successful deployment of the MRIC exemplifies the Marine Corps' modernization efforts. By putting next-generation technology into the hands of highly trained Marines, the joint force remains postured and ready to support allies, partners, and regional stability.

“The Marines are working hard and without a doubt are motivated,” said Gutierrez. “They took the initiative and the opportunity in years of work to come out here and lead this live fire. Without their commitment to the mission, we would not be here, and we would not be successful. For that I’m extremely proud of our Marines.”

U.S., Malaysia armed forces gather for Bersama Warrior 2026 closing ceremony

KUANTAN, Malaysia – The 12th iteration of Bersama Warrior drew to a close on June 12, 2026, at the Joint Warfighting Center in Kuantan, Malaysia. Bersama Warrior is a bilateral, U.S. Army Pacific-led joint exercise sponsored by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and hosted by the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Bersama Warrior is designed to strengthen defense ties, enhance combined interoperability, and develop combined staff processes. This year’s iteration brought together a mix of active duty, reserve, and National Guard service members from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force to train alongside their Malaysian counterparts during the command post exercise.Approximately 130 U.S. service members–including active-duty, Reserve and National Guard personnel–participated in this year’s iteration which began on June 13.

“We have challenged ourselves to think [quickly] and operate in a complex and dynamic environment through rigorous discussions, deliberate planning, and synchronized decision making. We have strengthened our ability to work together as a combined force,” said Malaysian Army Brig. Gen. Azman Md Zain, commander of the 31st Infantry Brigade, and task force commander for the exercise. “I've had the opportunity to observe the professionalism, dedication, and commitment demonstrated by every participant, whether serving as planners, controllers, evaluators, or members of [the] training audience. Each of you contributes significantly to the success of this exercise.”

The CPX focused on humanitarian assistance, stability operations, and multinational coordination, requiring participants to adapt to unexpected challenges while maintaining unity of effort across the combined force. The command post exercise enabled commanders and staff sections to validate planning assumptions, test communication processes, and refine decision-making in a realistic operational environment and provided participants at all levels with valuable experience operating as a joint, multinational force.

“Addressing…challenges in today's increasingly complex security environment such as terrorism, cyber threat, natural disaster, and other transnational security issues requires close cooperation and collective response,” said Zain. “Exercises, such as the Bersama Warrior, play a vital role in building partnership, exchanging knowledge, sharing best practice, and developing the professional relationship necessary for future collaboration.”

The exercise brought together service members from across the joint force, including members of the Washington National Guard, who collaborate regularly with the Malaysian Armed Forces under the National Guard State Partnership Program.

“The security challenges of today's world demand cooperation among partners; no single nation can address every challenge,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Michael Ake, land component commander for the Washington National Guard. Ake served as deputy task force commander to Zain during the exercise, delivering comments and making decisions based on information provided by the staff during CPX.

Since 2017, the Washington National Guard and Malaysian Armed Forces have worked together to strengthen military readiness, build enduring professional relationships, and support a shared commitment to regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

“As we close this chapter, let us remember that readiness is not a destination, but a continuous journey,” said Ake. “Be proud of what we have achieved together and continue to build fun. Next year, our team will reunite, and you'll be stronger, more capable, and more united in the world.”

Future Naval Aviators and International Military Students Complete Carrier Qualifications Aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower

ATLANTIC OCEAN — Student naval aviators assigned to Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) successfully completed Carrier Qualifications (CQ) aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), June 27–30, 2026.

The multi-day training evolution focused on developing the next generation of fleet aviators, specifically highlighting pilots navigating the E-2 Hawkeye pipeline, alongside International Military Students (IMS) training seamlessly with the U.S. Navy.

CQ serves as a critical capstone event in the advanced naval aviation training syllabus. The evolution requires students to demonstrate precise aircraft handling, exceptional situational awareness, and the ability to execute the rigorous procedures required to safely launch and recover from a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier operating at sea.

Over the three-day evolution, SNAs assigned to CNATRA, working alongside the IKE team, conducted 428 traps and 143 touch-and-go landings, qualifying 24 aviators. The qualifying personnel consisted of 15 E-2 SNAs, seven IMS, and two strike pilots.

Carrier qualifications are not a mandatory syllabus requirement for strike students, but when deck time and aviation assets permit, a small number of strike students are provided the opportunity to participate and gain early carrier experience alongside their E-2 and international counterparts.

The inclusion of international military students underscores the Department of War's ongoing commitment to strengthening global partnerships and interoperability. By completing the rigorous CNATRA syllabus and qualifying alongside U.S. forces on an American aircraft carrier, these allied pilots build foundational skills that directly enhance combined maritime operations worldwide.

“Carrier qualifications demand the highest levels of focus, skill, and teamwork,” said Capt. Travis Suggs, CNATRA operations officer. “Watching our future pilots and our international military students successfully catch the wire aboard the Dwight D. Eisenhower is a testament to the quality of our training pipelines, the dedication of our instructors, and the immense capability of the ship's crew.”

IKE’s crew provided the essential platform, arresting gear support, and air traffic control required for the evolution, integrating the training aircraft into their flight deck operations to ensure a safe and effective qualification environment.

“We cannot build combat-ready aviators alone,” said Rear Adm. Max McCoy, CNATRA. “We build them with the fleet, so thank you to the IKE crew, our instructors, and our maintainers. Your professionalism and commitment ensure our future aviators are ready for the fight.”

Headquartered at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, CNATRA oversees the Naval Air Training Command (NATRACOM) which is composed of five training air wings and 17 training squadrons located across Florida, Mississippi, and Texas. The command is responsible for safely conducting primary, intermediate, and advanced flight training for U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and allied international student naval aviators and flight officers.

Weathered by time after decades in storage, the podium President John F. Kennedy used during the dedication of Greers Ferry Dam might easily be overlooked. Yet on Oct. 3, 1963, it stood at the center of a historic moment as Kennedy dedicated a project whose benefits continue to be felt across Arkansas and the nation.

More than six decades later, the restored podium once again tells that story. Now the centerpiece of the JFK exhibit at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center, it offers visitors a tangible connection to Kennedy's dedication of Greers Ferry Dam.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers unveiled the restored podium during a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 1, 2026, as part of the nation's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

"We are proud to provide the podium with apermanent home at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center, where it will stand as a symbol of our history and continue to educate and inspire everyone who visits,” said Benny Rorie, operations project manager for Greers Ferry Lake.

Standing behind the podium on that October day, Kennedy addressed a crowd of thousands gathered to celebrate the completion of Greers Ferry Dam and the lasting benefits it would provide for generations to come.

Less than two months later, he was assassinated in Dallas, making the Greers Ferry dedication one of the final public appearances of his presidency.

"When people see this podium, they're connecting with more than a moment in history," said Col. Tom Allard, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District. "They're connecting with a vision that continues to serve the American people. As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, this exhibit reminds us that projects like Greers Ferry Lake contribute to our nation's prosperity through recreation, hydropower, flood risk reduction, water supply and environmental stewardship."

Today, more than 2 million people visit Greers Ferry Lake each year to enjoy its recreational opportunities. The project also generates more than 200 million kilowatt-hours of renewable hydroelectric power each year and has prevented more than $560 million in flood damages since construction.

In addition, it provides municipal and industrial water supply, supports fish and wildlife habitat and advances environmental stewardship, benefiting communities across the region.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to reflect on the investments and engineering achievements that have helped shape the nation. Greers Ferry Lake stands as an example of how infrastructure investments continue to improve lives, strengthen communities and deliver lasting value.

Today, visitors to the William Carl Garner Visitor Center can view the restored podium and explore how Greers Ferry Lake continues to fulfill the vision President Kennedy shared on that October day more than 60 years ago.

The sea unites what the land divides. RIMPAC 2026 has reunited two Naval officers after they first met 19 years ago. In 2002 in the Italian port city of Livorno on the west coast of Tuscany, Midshipman Eder Arnaldo Suclla Ardiles, from the Peruvian Navy joined the Italian Naval Academy as part of an international training program. Also attending the program was Midshipman Antonio Bufis from the Italian Navy. The two officers went on to graduate in 2007.

19 years later, against the backdrop of Exercise RIMPAC 2026, those bonds proved as strong as ever. Having risen through the ranks, Commander Bufis, now has command of ITS Giovanni delle Bande Nere, and Commander Suclla Ardiles is serving on the RIMPAC staff.

RIMPAC 2026, the world's largest international maritime exercise, provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2026 is the 30th exercise in the series that began in 1971. The reunion of Cmdr. Bufis and Cmdr. Suclla Ardiles demonstrates the true meaning of international naval cooperation and the enduring value of cooperation among nations. The professional and personal bonds forged between sailors and officers often reveals itself many years later, strengthening mutual understanding, trust, and friendship.

“Meeting Eder again after 19 years was genuinely special,” Cmdr. Bufis said. “Although our careers have taken us to different parts of the world, the values and friendships we built together at the Naval Academy has endured. Seeing each other again here at RIMPAC is a reminder that the sea connects people and nations in ways that last a lifetime.”

These meetings stand as a powerful reminder that international cooperation extends far beyond operational activities and training. It builds lasting relationships between people, reinforces mutual trust between allied and partner navies, and contributes to a shared commitment to maritime security and stability. Cmdr. Bufis said the greatest highlight of RIMPAC so far has been the opportunity to train and operate alongside so many partner navies.

“RIMPAC is much more than an exercise, it’s a unique opportunity to strengthen interoperability, exchange professional experience, and build the trust that underpins maritime security. And, of course, Hawaii provides an exceptional setting to bring all of this together.”

U.S. Coast Guard prepares for Typhoon Bavi, urges Marianas residents to act now

SANTA RITA, Guam — The U.S. Coast Guard team in Guam is coordinating with the National Weather Service, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and local and federal partners as part of a unified One Marianas preparations for Typhoon Bavi (09W).

Residents and mariners should monitor official guidance from the National Weather Service and local emergency management authorities and take protective action now, before conditions deteriorate.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts rapid intensification in the coming days, with Bavi potentially reaching super typhoon strength as it approaches the region around Sunday, July 5. The National Weather Service Guam Weather Forecast Office advises that the potential for a typhoon passage somewhere in the Marianas continues to increase. Track and intensity forecasts carry uncertainty; conditions may change rapidly in either direction, or even a slight shift in track could significantly change impacts to Guam.

A Message on Readiness "We prepare for every storm as if it's going to hit us directly, because the better prepared we are, the easier recovery can be," said Capt. Jessica Worst, commander of U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam. "Our team is moving boats, securing our base, and getting our cutters underway — the community has that same window to get ready, and it's closing. Don't wait for the warning to tell you what you already know is coming. Use today to prepare."

U.S. Coast Guard Assets and Port Conditions As part of established storm preparation protocols, U.S. Coast Guard cutters homeported in Apra Harbor are scheduled to depart the island ahead of tropical storm force winds. This is standard practice and is not a withdrawal of support. Repositioning preserves the cutter crews' ability to return quickly and respond to post-storm emergencies, including search and rescue, once it is safe to operate.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor personnel are pulling station small boats from the water and trailering smaller response boats to protect them from storm surge and debris damage. As these assets are secured, on-water response capability will be reduced in the hours leading up to, during, and immediately after the storm. This makes it more important than ever that the public take precautions now and avoid situations that could require rescue.

Port conditions will change as Bavi approaches. Vessel and facility operators should track Captain of the Port Guam port condition updates and be ashore, secured, and sheltered well before ports close to all vessel movement.

What the Public Needs to Do Now Stay out of the water. Beaches, reefs, and nearshore areas will become dangerous as the storm approaches. Waves, surges, and currents during tropical weather events have claimed lives. No recreational activity is worth the risk. The National Weather Service has advised that seas will build, and hazardous surf and dangerous rip currents are expected along east-facing reefs as Bavi nears. Additional watches, warnings, and advisories may be issued as the storm strengthens and its track becomes clearer.

Do not rely on the U.S. Coast Guard or other first responders to retrieve unsecured equipment. Kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, outboard motors, and other water sports gear that break free during storms may be spotted adrift, prompting emergency calls. First responders are not available to search for property during storm operations, and debris in the water creates real hazards for recovery efforts afterward. Secure or store all water sports equipment now.

Remove or properly secure any small vessels at public marinas. Sunken or damaged vessels after a storm create environmental hazards, obstruct navigation, and recovery costs fall on vessel owners.

If You Are in Distress Social media is not monitored by U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders or emergency responders. Do not post a distress call on Facebook, Instagram, or any other platform expecting a response.

If you or someone else is in distress:

Call 911 for shore-based emergencies. Note: The SOS function on cellular phones is not reliable in this region.
Transmit a mayday call on VHF-FM Channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency, monitored 24 hours a day by the U.S. Coast Guard and mariners at sea.
Activate a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) if you have one — it transmits your GPS coordinates directly to search and rescue authorities.
There are still VHF outages due to equipment damage from Typhoon Sinlaku, meaning VHF service in some areas is limited and may require relay from other operators. Have multiple means of communication, including EPIRBs and PLBs, cellular phones, and satellite phones.
Please recognize that first responders shelter during the height of the storm and are not immediately available for response. They will begin assessment, response, and recovery operations post-storm as soon as it is safe to do so.

Stay Informed Residents should monitor the National Weather Service Guam Weather Forecast Office at www.weather.gov/gum and follow official guidance from their respective homeland security officers and local authorities. Conditions can change rapidly. Do not wait for the last possible moment to take protective action. The U.S. Coast Guard will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
