7-2-26. Good afternoon the the Katmai Bears fans! The explore.org Play by Play live chat starts at 5 PM EST, in about one hour. This is a great way to learn about bear behavior as the explore naturalist Mike Fitz and Katmai rangers go over recent events, and answer submitted viewer questions.
5-12-26 Good morning everyone 🙂. Here are a few scaps from yesterday's video ( https://youtu.be/8s6Zd2zAtkU?si=A-3C7... ) of M15's tail feathers. We can now see the outermost tail feathers that are growing in symmetrically.
5-4-26 Good evening everyone 🦅 In today's video of M15's visit ( https://youtu.be/HUpKNVp8rfU?si=l8h6V... ), we can clearly see six tail feathers (rectrices). M15 is molting, as they do at the end of breeding season. His tail feathers will molt out (fall out) symmetrically on each side (he normally has twelve). This will allow him to keep strong flight during molt. The new feathers come in behind the older feathers that molt, and he will have bright new white tail feathers by the start of Season 15. Tap on the pics to open them full screen. Zoomed in scaps courtesy of Dick Pritchett Real Estate, Inc.
4-27-26. Here is a screenshot from this morning of M15's tail feathers. He is molting right now (replacing older feathers with new ones). While I cannot say for sure in this view, it appears he has eight of his twelve rectrices (tail feathers). A few appear to be overlapping one another; he may have a couple less than eight. The tail feathers molt out (fall out) symmetrically on each side, and the new ones will come in shiny and white. Click on the picture to open it.
4-25-26 Good morning everyone 🙂, I have received messages asking if this could be E26 who looped through yesterday, 4-24-26, when M15 was at the pond ( link: https://youtu.be/eWsf1L5zpAI?si=3HfTZ... ). This was a heron (appears to be a Great Blue Heron). The heron is circled. Note the long trailing legs, retracted neck/head position in flight, and plumage. The position of the sun does distort color; however, even with zoomed/cropped screen captures, this is clearly a heron, not an eagle. E26 was last in cam view 4-17-26, and it appears E26 has dispersed. Migration restlessness (Zugunruhe) sets in, and most juvies continue on their journey once they leave. While I do not expect E26 to return, we will all keep an eye out. Safe travels, E26; we hope you always have food in your crop, and beautiful waterfront areas to perch/roost. 💕
Good afternoon everyone. Here is an update posted by the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Team on their official Facebook page regarding M15 being out of cam view since early evening on 4-7-26: www.facebook.com/SouthwestFloridaEagleCam
