12:34pm —-> I READ THE TIME PRINTED PERFECTLY ON MY LAPTOP
Then I raced to Google.
“Obituary” is the phrase I typed in and realized I had almost forgotten.
9 years ago to this exact day — my dad took his last breath.
He slipped away peacefully at 5am after a grueling battle with a hemorrhagic stroke.
They say he’d never open his eyes again. And was completely brain dead.
But as with most things in life he clearly didn’t take that for an answer.
60 days after the stroke he could open his eyes.
Squeeze my hand for yes and no questions and raise his hands. ☀️🫱🏾🫲🏿 He even gave me a hug as my huge Afro topped over him.
The final cause was silent heart failure.
I think the odd thing about grief is that overtime you feel guilty about not remembering every detail and piece of the story.
As if time was supposed to pause.
But it never does.
He used to say to us while we were outside as children in our enormous back yard gazing at the stars, in his deep stark tone:
(While my mom was inside making dinner, or crafting stunning vases)
“Time waits for no man.”
Well, he was right about that and 1 million other things 😂
He was right about China taking over eventually…
About watching who your friends are…
About diligence + hard work…
And about travel too. He was well traveled.
Now that I remember I can’t recall too much he was wrong about 🧠
He was the smartest man I’d known, a whiz at math and I couldn’t even grasp those concepts.
Always available.
Always laughing with his grand children.
And if he could see this right now.
He’d say, “Wow, Tiff - you made it, you did it and shocked me too.”
