Can AI really think, or are we just projecting human traits onto machines? ๐ค๐ญ

โThere's a lot of noise around whether chatbots like ChatGPT are conscious, have minds, or display rationality and intelligence similar to humans. The pace of advances, combined with hyped headlines and confident explanations from brilliant engineers, can make it easy to lose sight of decades of research by philosophers, logicians, and cognitive scientists.
In this first session of a three-part series, I will introduce and clarify these technical terms -- intelligence, reasoning, and rationality -- and reflect on them in light of advanced AI systems. In the following two sessions, I will turn to concepts of mind and consciousness, bringing both philosophical perspectives and evidence from recent AI research. The goal of this series is to shed light on these often misunderstood concepts and give the audience some practical knowledge for navigating their own thinking and decision-making about the promises and limits of AI.
I will also be recording a few podcast episodes on these in the near future, so stay tuned for that!
