On This Day: March 7, 1945 – The Crossing at Remagen
Today we remember a pivotal moment in World War II history. On March 7, 1945, U.S. forces captured the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, Germany, marking the first time Allied troops crossed the Rhine River into enemy territory.
This unexpected success allowed the Allies to establish a crucial bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Rhine, accelerating their push into Germany and hastening the end of the war. Though the fighting was fierce and the cost was high, the courage and determination of the soldiers who stormed that bridge changed the course of history.
