Google Just Made "Already Optimized" a Dangerous Assumption

Then they ran it through AlphaEvolve and found double-digit efficiency still sitting on the table.


On July 9, Google made AlphaEvolve generally available to every Google Cloud customer. For seven months it lived behind a private preview. Now anyone can open it.


Here's what separates it from the coding assistants you already use. It doesn't autocomplete. You hand it a working algorithm and a way to measure "better." It generates hundreds of mutated versions, scores each one, keeps the winners, and repeats — until it returns human-readable code that outperforms what you started with.


Coolblue cut forecast error by over 5% in roughly 200 iterations. BASF built a supply-chain digital twin after deterministic models had failed outright. Google used it on its own TPU circuits and recovered about 0.7% of global compute capacity — a rounding error that costs a fortune at that scale.


The detail most coverage skipped: the scoring step runs on your infrastructure. Google's models never see the algorithm or the data. Only the score travels back.

That one design choice opens pharma, finance, and defense-adjacent manufacturing.
My prediction: within 18 months, whoever writes the scoring function will matter more than whoever writes the algorithm. Defining what "better" means becomes the bottleneck.
