What is a Satellite? | सैटेलाइट क्या होता है?
Explanation:
A satellite is any object that orbits a planet. The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite, and any man-made object that revolves around Earth is called an artificial satellite.
In simple terms — a satellite is an object that moves around a larger celestial body under the influence of gravity.
🚀 How Satellites Work:
Satellites stay in orbit because of a delicate balance between two forces:
1. Gravity pulls the satellite toward Earth.
2. Forward velocity (speed) pushes it outward.
When these two forces are balanced, the satellite keeps “falling” around Earth without hitting it — that’s what an orbit is.
Satellites are launched using rockets. Once the rocket reaches a certain height and speed, it releases the satellite into its intended orbit — Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), or Geostationary Orbit (GEO), depending on its purpose.
🛰️ Types of Satellites:
1️⃣ Communication Satellites – relay TV, internet, and phone signals (e.g., INSAT, GSAT).
2️⃣ Remote Sensing Satellites – take images for agriculture, mapping, and disaster monitoring (e.g., IRS series, CartoSat).
3️⃣ Navigation Satellites – provide GPS-like services (e.g., NavIC).
4️⃣ Scientific Satellites – study planets, the Sun, or space environment (e.g., Aryabhata, Chandrayaan).
5️⃣ Weather Satellites – monitor climate, storms, and clouds (e.g., INSAT-3D).
6️⃣ Spy / Defence Satellites – used for surveillance and national security.
🇮🇳 India’s Satellite Journey:
India’s satellite program began in 1975 with the launch of Aryabhata — our first satellite.
Since then, ISRO has built and launched hundreds of satellites — for communication (GSAT), remote sensing (CartoSat), and navigation (NavIC).
India now operates one of the world’s largest and most cost-effective satellite systems.
💡 Why Satellites Matter:
Satellites help us:
Predict weather and track cyclones 🌪️
Enable GPS, maps, and navigation 📡
Provide internet and communication to remote areas 📶
Study Earth’s environment and natural resources 🌏
Support national defence and disaster management 🛰️
In short — satellites are the eyes and ears of our planet, connecting technology, science, and daily life.
