Tales In Ancient Books

About the Channel:

This channel is dedicated to my Random Thoughts on history and culture. I specialize in reading and analyzing old pre-colonial and colonial books and documents from Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda, as well as historical records from Ethiopia. My goal is to uncover the forgotten stories of the Horn of Africa and Eastern Africa in general by revisiting these primary sources.

If you are interested in getting a physical copy of this historical text, please leave me a comment below so I can add you to my list!

Tales In Ancient Books

Your copy of SEVENTEEN TRIPS THROUGH SOMALILAND is here.

This book has been sitting in colonial archives for over a century.

Generally, the people it discusses in detail have never read it.

H.G.C Swayne travelled through the land of the Somali in the late 1800s and recorded what he saw: the land, the people, the culture and the way of life.

He also enumerates many animals found in the lands of the Somalis, some of which are not found anywhere else in the world.

He also provides interesting details from his private meeting with Ras Makunan, the governor of Harar, including the long term plans to expand the borders of Ethiopia to the Red Sea or the Indian Ocean. Ras Makunan was the father of Haile Selassie the latter emperor of Ethiopia.

I read the book and made videos about it. And many asked where they could get a copy.

Now you can.

Order your copy:

In the US → Available on Amazon: amzn.to/4op2Eit (Affiliate link)

In East Africa → Available at Nuria Bookshop, The Bazaar Plaza, Moi Avenue, Nairobi.

You can also order online and get it shipped to you: nuriakenya.com/product/seventeen-trips-through-som…

Get a copy and travel with HGC Swayne through the lands of the Somali in the 1880s and 1890s!

Tales In Ancient Books

DO YOU NEED A PHYSICAL COPY OF A RARE PRE-COLONIAL OR COLONIAL ERA BOOK?

Yesterday I met and had a long conversation with Mr. Abdullahi Bulle the founder and CEO of Nuria Bookstore, one of the biggest bookstore brands in Nairobi and Kenya.

He agreed to have Nuria facilitate the sourcing and shipping of the pre-colonial and colonial era books that I analyze on TikTok and YouTube.

Nuria ships within Kenya, the horn of Africa, Africa and much of the rest of the world.

Most of these titles are out of print, so having many copies demanded at the same time can reduce the cost significantly as opposed to needing a single copy printed

If you need a physical copy of any of the titles, fill out this form and I will reach out when the copies are ready: forms.gle/TH8ffJNdCed8CE4g6 (FIND AND CLICK IT ON MY BIO)

The form will help me and Nuria batch the needed copies to reduce the cost.

The books I have already analyzed include:

> Seventeen Trips Through Somaliland by HGC Swayne (1895)

> First Steps in East Africa by Sir Richard Burton (1856)

> The Mad Mullah of Somaliland by Douglas Jardine (1923)

> A Tear for Somalia by Douglas Collins (1960)

> Vocabulary of the Engútuk Eloikǒb, Or of the Language of the Wakuafi-nation in the Interior of Equatorial Africa by Ludwig Krapf (1854)

> The East Africa Protectorate by Sir Charles Elliott (1905)

> Kenya from a Chartered Company to a Crown Colony by CW Hobley (1929)

> The Nandi, their Language and Folklore by C. Hollis (1909)

> The Bantu Beliefs and Magic by CW Hobley (1922)

NB/ You can add any other pre-colonial or colonial book you have been looking for in the form: forms.gle/TH8ffJNdCed8CE4g6 (FIND AND CLICK IT ON MY BIO)
