The original Steam Machine wasn't really made by Valve but instead made by a bunch of 3rd party companies including Dell's Alienware with each one making there own design and specs.

It kinda reminds of the Pong Consoles in the 1970's where you don't just have a Pong console, but a bagillion different ones made by different companies with bizarre designs!

Not to mention it was running early SteamOS, back when Linux still needs refinement. So during this time, you just have to hope that the game you wanted to play has a Linux port, but since Windows had the majority back during this time. Most companies didn't bother porting on Linux.

Nowadays, Windows started getting worse & worse while Linux has gotten better & better to where it's practically usable now (Hell I'm using Linux now!) & you can play Windows games on Linux thanks to Valve's Black Magic and a variety of compatibility layer tools!
