It's looking increasingly likely the western Pacific's first named storm of the year could be forming next week. As usual the GFS is pretty aggressive hinting at a strong tropical storm or typhoon near the Philippines. The Euro operational runs show nothing, but looking under the hood, the ensembles are lit up with storm tracks, which suggests it's picking up on this feature. I've included both below. I'll be gearing up a 24/7 live stream soon monitoring this feature so folks can get the latest information, hang out in the chat with fellow tropical nerds or post any questions.

Typhoon and hurricane season is right around the corner and this year broadcasting on Youtube will be my main focus. Storm chasing live streams will be the priority, giving you an unfiltered, front row seat as I hunt down fierce typhoons and hurricanes. I'm also developing an array of new perks for CHANNEL MEMBERS, including a curated "Twitter style" community posts feed giving Members a heads up on possible major storms before they've even formed, commentary on major natural events as they take place and other useful information. I'll also be posting behind the scenes 'director's cut' style videos on past and recent chases and adventures, only available for members.
I'm also working on something BIG - an array of awesome, unique products for the channel in the extreme weather, volcanoes and earthquake space. This is a LONG haul project which I'm super excited to be developing but it's going to take a while, so make sure you stick around to see how things progress.
Thoughts are with the people of Mandalay and nearby areas in Myanmar after a very powerful, shallow M7.7 earthquake struck. This is likely to be a very destructive event given the proximity to a large city.
Today marks a somber anniversary in Japan - 14 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake (東日本大震災), a M9 quake that shook the entire country and spawned a tsunami that ravaged hundreds of kilometers of coastline. Close to 20,000 people died that day, and many others had their lives irrevocably changed. The photos below illustrate the extent of the devastation
Cyclone Zelia's gone full throttle overnight and rapidly intensified into what looks like a strong category 4 (SSHS) storm - it's taking full advantage of very warm sea temps, lots of moisture and low wind shear. The forecast is still a tough call - will it nudge west and make landfall near Port Samson like some of the models are showing or start tracking towards Port Hedland? Right now the storm is stationary, if the westerly solutions are going to verify it should start trekking in that direction in the next few hours. So, as always, if your in the warning zone make sure you're cyclone prep is complete as soon as possible and get ready to hunker down.
Tropical Cyclone Zelia has formed off the coast of Western Australia and it looks like this one could get pretty strong before it makes landfall. Where and when that will happen is a tough call and I don't envy the forecasters with this one. Both the GFS and ECMWF models show a slow down and erratic movement just off the coast. The BoM bring it ashore with sustained winds of 85kts and central pressure of 952hPa. The slow movement will also exacerbate the flooding. If you're in the warning zone stay safe and get your cyclone prep wrapped up as soon as possible.
Ahhh that crushing feeling having to miss out on a massive weather event, it never gets easier. Alas no snow coverage this week due to flu / covid / whatever viruses
Attention all Japan powder heads! You thought this week was good, wait until next week. Biggest sea effect set up of the winter on the cards right now if the models hold. JMA even have an early warning of extreme weather graphic out for snow, first time I’ve seen that for a long time. I’ll be working this set up from Monday next week.
