Some nights the fiddles rest, the lanterns burn low, and someone
sits down at the old upright in the corner. Thirty new songs came
out of those nights — a changeling who wears a hundred faces, a
halfling rogue explaining how the job "went fine," a mimic who
just wants someone to open him gently.

Some are, regrettably, very soft behind the ears.

This is a comic medieval fantasy tavern song about a dangerous creature negotiating the exact terms under which she may be petted — and losing that negotiation badly.

One scratch behind the ear. Briefly. Once.

least of all the bard, who writes everything down.

3,000 of you at the table now. 🍺

I should be honest about something.
When I started singing here, I was playing to an empty room.

Then a goblin nobody wanted got herself adopted.
A tiefling found a chair that had been kept against the wall for her.
A druid refused to turn back into a person.
A cat put one paw up and said, politely, no.

None of them walked in on their own.
Every one of them got here because somebody sat down, stayed to the last verse, and told a friend there was a song worth hearing.

That's what 3,000 means from where I'm standing.
Not a number. Three thousand chairs that didn't used to have anyone in them.

So tonight the whole crew is up on the table, the candles are lit, and the round is on the house.

Not every night at the tavern sounds the same.
Some nights you sit with an empty chair and a candle burning down.
Some nights a halfling climbs onto the table with an axe.
