How do you face temptation? St John Henry Newman suggested that during Lent, we practise subduing our minds to resist temptation as Jesus did.

To be subdued means to be quiet, to quieten down our self-willed instincts and hand over control to someone else. Here are three ways Newman suggests we subdue ourselves to Christ:

1. Subdue our curiosity. We spend too much time satisfying our curiosity about things that don't concern us.
2. Subdue our desire for knowledge. Our desire for knowledge, while good, can easily consume us if we let it and take us away from God as our greatest pursuit.
3. Subdue our will. We think it’s a virtue to be self-willed, but Newman suggests that we deliberately practise consulting the wills of others.
