Arnette Solon Ball November 28, 1933 - July 25, 2026

Some of you noticed i had been using a variation of a "Sitting Shiva" background over the last week or so. The background became a comedic way of referencing the tradition among Jews of Sitting Shiva after the death of a family member for roughly 7 days. I had to look this up because, as my mother and i often joked, she had a genuine hostility toward anything mystical and she would have found this to be hilarious. When she died while my daughters were away visiting other family i chose this method of paying an appropriately inappropriate comedic tribute without saying anything before I could tell my babies in person. My daughters loved grandma and they were for her the real meaning of her entire existence.

Per her wishes her body has been donated to science and when complete there her ashes will be scattered on the ceremonial grounds behind the anatomy board here in Maryland. She wanted no services and was adamant about her death not costing us one penny and providing some modicum of value to humanity.

She did the best that could be expected given her imposed circumstances. She loved art, literature, murder mysteries, labor movements, liberation struggles, and communism.

I rewatched Curb Your Enthusiasm Episode 3 Season 6 as i promised her i would since she thought their handling of his mother's death was hilarious. After all, my mother was very New York City, Brooklyn Jew.
