Our History Underfoot

Our History Underfoot explores forgotten places, old railways, canals, and historic infrastructure through walking and outdoor exploration.

These videos focus on the history we still walk over every day — often hidden in plain sight beneath our feet. From abandoned railway lines and lost stations to reservoirs, bridges, and industrial remains, each walk uncovers how the past continues to shape the landscapes around us.

This channel was previously known as Trekking Exploration. The name has changed to better reflect the shared history, slower pace, and place-based storytelling that now defines the channel.

New videos document Britain’s overlooked and disappearing past — one walk at a time.

Our History Underfoot

A walk along the route of the Great Central Railway into Leicester.

I begin at Whetstone Viaduct and follow the old railway north towards Leicester, looking at what remains of this remarkable line along the way.

The journey ends for myself at Leicester Central Station — once a major railway station, at one time the largest structure in Leicester.

There's still far more of the old railway left than you might think.

What remains of Leicester's lost mainline?

Our History Underfoot

The pond within Nottingham's Vernon Park wasn't originally built as a park feature at all. The same can be said about the grounds within the high stone walls.
In fact, it existed long before the park and was once part of a very different landscape.
