Alfred Edersheim was a 19th century Jewish convert to Christ and a leading authority on ancient Judaism, Jewish literature, and Jewish customs. He is best known for such books as "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah" and "The Temple: Its Ministry and Services as They Were at the Time of Jesus Christ". In one of his lesser known works, "Prophecy and History in Relation to the Messiah", he had the following to say about the Apocrypha vis-a-vis the Messianic hope. For Leo, devout and holy hearts have no trouble seeing the Lord's passion and understanding the mystery of salvation clearly unfolded in the Gospel. Accordingly, if the Gospel is obscure to any individual, or groups of individuals, such that someone or something else is necessary to make it clear to said individual or group, it follows that, per this understanding of Leo, such people must not be holy and devout.
