I guess I can say I'm definitely moving up in the world in regards to making WoW based content! From making my first video just rambling on about TBC Classic, making a levelling guide to level 70 to where this channel is today. It never would have happened if it wasn't for you guys who take time out of your day to watch what I have to say, so I want to give a huge shout out to all you! I'm very excited and proud to be given such an opportunity to be a part of Classic TBC history and I'll see you all on the other side of the Dark Portal!
As some of you are aware, a piece of my work has been plagiarised and posted on Youtube yesterday. Specifically speaking my original 60-70 leveling guide by 'Solheim - World of Warcraft'. For the sake of clarity plagiarism is defined as presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent.
Let me be clear, TBC is a very old game, practically one and a half decades old. Naturally, there is going to be a lot of overlap on certain topics ranging from PvP, raiding compositions, boss fight mechanics and so on. This is ultimately good for the game because it promotes it and drives interest leading towards a more enjoyable player experience, even if Blizzard does try its best to ruin that in various ways but that is a separate issue.
I do not hold any kind of monopoly on leveling guides, there are many out there and very good ones in fact. Some of you will know who have followed my channel from the start that my leveling guide could be seen as 'my big break' when I only had about 350 subscribers. For whatever reason it become quite popular, which led to Staysafe TV reacting to the entire guide in front of an audience of 3000 viewers, which I am very grateful for, then the rest is history and it currently stands at 213,000 views as of writing this.
That original guide that I made wasn't perfect, when doing all the research from calculating reputations, checking mob and boss levels, viability of certain routes, optimising which dungeons were best to do etc, that was all done without access to the TBC Classic beta which wasn't released then, TBC Classic wasn't even officially announced to be precise. Everything was done by researching old data as well as using some memories from 2007 to try and make a fast and effective guide from 60-70 during the madness of launch week. So naturally there are actually quite a few mistakes in it, which when I look back on, it annoys me because of how simple they were. So as some of you may have seen, on Sunday I uploaded a very concise, updated and improved route so that people can use on launch day which removes the previous mistakes in my original video.
Back to the matter at hand. When you watch my original guide and Solheim's video he uploaded yesterday side by side, it is clear to anyone that almost the entirety of the video has been plagiarised. The route he uses is exactly the same (although he sprinkles in the Ring of Blood as his only original recommendation), the dungeon maps I edited to outline details of the area as well as certain trash packs not to miss to maximise experience are from my video, the reputation values are straight from my guide with a TBC Classic logo slapped on the face of it and most evidently the same mistakes that I made in the original guide are exactly the same.
This is most notable where in my original guide I glossed over the detail as to who should run Black Morass for physical damage pre-bis items and it would take 18 runs to reach Revered without accounting for quest reputation and many people freaked out thinking that everyone had to do this, this was then clarified in my updated video posted on Sunday to amend the mistake and confusion caused. Yet in Solheim's video he still recommends doing the same 18 runs of Black Morass blindly without saying who should be doing it or why, clearly showing he hasn't put any original thought into his video and just mirrored what I said whether it was correct or wrong information in the first place.
This is pretty much the equivalent of when a kid thinks they are being clever and copies someone else's math test and doesn't produce any of their own working out for the calculations. You then end up with two tests with identical answers and mistakes however one has all the working out and the other is just the answers, it wouldn't take a detective to deduce which test belongs to the cheater.
So why am I calling this out if my original guide wasn't perfect and has several mistakes? Quite simply because if I let the first instance of someone plagiarising my content slide, it invites it to happen again and again and again with impunity. While I know my original guide isn't perfect, I put in about two weeks worth of effort, while working as a full time teacher as well as being a very basic and amateur video editor but I will be damned if I let someone else take a piece of work I was proud to produce and brand it as 'inspiration'.
Plagiarism is theft, it hurts people who put in hard work and it only damages your integrity if you do it.
New blue post confirmed what I predicted in my video yesterday that Season 1 starts a couple of weeks after launch. If you want to be ready for Season 1 make sure you check this one out!
