Practical Networking

If you’ve been in the Network Engineering career field for any small amount of time, then you’ve probably been frustrated at how difficult it was to find articles and videos that were reliable, thorough, and understandable.

You found articles that were very entry level, that perhaps gave simple definitions but did not communicate enough to explain how technologies actually worked. You found articles that were overly detailed, that went into so much minutia that the original point would be lost.

The intent of the blog and video channel is to bridge that gap β€” providing the happy, practical medium between overly simplistic and overly detailed.

PracNet teaches in a manner that is accessible, easy to learn, and easy to pass on. By presenting complex technology simply, PracNet provides practical, immediately applicable, knowledge of the Network Engineering industry.

πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ 270k Subscribers AMA... and two answers to common questions πŸ‘‡

Hey all, it's that time again to do another AMA (Ask Me Anything). I was going to do these every 50 k, but we blew past 250k and 200k, so now we're doing one for 270k =).

Please post your questions below, and I'll pick a few lucky ones

Before we begin, I have two answers I want to provide for questions that I know will come up:

Q1. What is the status of your Networking course?

The Networking course has 8 of the projected 12-15 lessons in Module 2 _already released_ and ready for consumption. The other lessons will be release periodically over the next couple weeks.

More info: pracnet.net/networking

Q2. What topic will you cover next on the channel?

We did the vote last week, and the winner was IPsec. I'm going to start scoping out the curriculum I want to create to illustrate. This could also lead into a discussion in IKEv2, Wireguard, OpenVPN, TLS, or other "tunneling" type protocols.

Practical Networking

πŸ“Š What would you like to see next on this channel? (πŸ‘‡ for more details)

I'm beginning to scope out the next project for the channel, there are four options:

1️⃣ Practical Cryptography series

This would be an extension to the current Crypto Essentials series, but wrapped around practical cryptography. Meaning every concept will be shown / proven with commands you can use to encrypt/decrypt/hash/etc.

2️⃣ IPsec Deep Dive

This would use the Crypto Essentials series as a jumping off point to understand exactly what happens on the wire in an IPsec VPN tunnel.

This could then be followed with other VPN tunnel protocols (Wireguard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, etc).

3️⃣ IPv6 Subnetting

I've taught IPv6 subnetting in person using a method that I've NEVER seen replicated elsewhere. It's been on my list to teach on YT for a while now. And perhaps, now is the time?

(fun fact, I purchased subnetipv6.com nearly 8 years ago for this exact purpose)

4️⃣ Something else (let me know by posting a comment)

If these three don't tickle your fancy, what else would you like to see covered?

I generally stick to vendor agnostic, technology focused concepts/protocols. For ideas, in the past I've offered continuing my TCP series (pracnet.net/tcp), unpacking DNS, Anycast, Traceroute, Interviews with experts, or a slew of other things.

If you want one of those, let me know with a comment and vote "4" in the poll.

Thanks all. <3

PS: Since I _know_ it's going to be asked... *Module 2 of my Networking course is 80% complete.* I'm releasing the first few videos to purchasers of the full course in the next week or two. Details: pracnet.net/networking. I do not yet know whether I will release Module 2 to Youtube. I've found a lot of plagiarized versions of Module 1 πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ, and am a little apprehensive.

πŸ“Š Do you prefer more "essentials" type videos? Or more "deeper dive" type videos?

The Cryptography series has finally come to an end. I set out to create an "essentials" cryptography course that could be the jumping off point into many different concepts.

But I'm curious to hear from you... do you prefer more "essentials" type videos? Or more "deeper dive" type videos?

For an examples of each:

πŸ‘‰ Here is the Crypto Essentials series: pracnet.net/ce

And here is a deeper dive video:

πŸ“Š How often do you configure or troubleshoot TLS/SSL ?

TLS/SSL is *everywhere*, but I'm curious, how often do YOU interact with it?

If you're interested in learning TLS/SSL more thoroughly, then I have important information for you:

October is my birthday month, and that seems like a good enough reason to discount my premier SSL deep dive course: Practical TLS.

For another 5 days, you can get the $297 course for only $58.

Use code: OctBDAY2024y

Promotion expires Oct 14.

SSL Certificate Revocation is the system by which we invalidate a "no longer good" Certificate. And this week, I'm doing a free, live webinar to illustrate exactly what Certificate Revocation is, and how it works.

πŸ“… Thursday April 4, 2024
⌚10a PDT / 1p EDT / 5pm UTC

In the session, we will cover:

- The need for Certificate Revocation
- CRLs - Certificate Revocation Lists
- OCSP - Online Certificate Status Protocol
- OCSP Stapling

Following the lecture, we'll do a live demo where we manually check the revocation status of a public website.

Expecting the session to run about 60 minutes.

Totally free. No registration required.

πŸ‘‰ app.sessions.us/session/0e9cd1b1-6992-4989-9df6-3e…

I'm testing new live training software, so unfortunately this session won't be live streamed to Youtube. (I'm also traveling, and don't have my live stream set up that I have at home).

Well, I ruptured my achilles tendon πŸ€•. Had surgery Monday, and I'm restricted to non weight bearing activities.

Which is perfect excuse for a few live streams! Starting with:

Just a few weeks ago, I reached another milestone –- crossing 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. This feels surreal, exhilarating, and humbling.

To every single one of you, I want to say... Thank you.

Thank you for watching my videos.

Thank you for liking/subscribing.

Thank you for sharing my content with your peers.

Thank you for all the positive comments you have left.

The comments are a stream of positivity and encouragement (and the occasional inside joke 😁).

Through approximately 150k~ subscribers, I read & replied to every single comment; after that it became too difficult to keep up. But still today I _read every single comment_ and reply when I can. Your comments energize and inspire me to continue building Practical Networking.

That said, I still vividly remember the challenging, early years on Youtube -- back before I had any meaningful number of subscribers. Putting so much effort into creating videos, and receiving so few (if any!) comments. It was a soul-sucking, disheartening grind that I am so grateful to be past... so again, THANK YOU.

Therefore, in recognition of that grind, just like when I passed 100k, I want to take this moment of passing 200k to shine some light on other creators that are making great educational content.

I recently polled all of you for recommendations, the only rule was they had to have less than 200k subs on Youtube. Below is a list of creators that are making or sharing high quality educational content for you.

Each of these creators have created or shared content that I have personally benefited from. If you're looking to round out your network of quality people to follow/subscribe to, these should all be on your list.

On to 2024, and the road to 300k subscribers. Thank you all again for joining me on this journey.

The holiday season is here, and I've decided to do something different instead of the usual course discount offer.

In the spirit of gift-giving, when you buy the course for $75 (normally $297) with the coupon 'HolidayGift2023', you'll also get an additional coupon that allows you to gift the same course to a friend for free.

This means that if you team up with a friend, both of you can access the course for less than $40 each!
