I've had a severely infected jaw because one tooth needs a root canal, requiring emergency room treatment. Around 20 teeth need to be removed, and the constant pain is draining. Byron, my husband, is also struggling. He has only 12 teeth left, and the continuous pain in his gums makes it hard for him to eat. He has lost weight and strength, and it is heartbreaking to see him suffer. A few months ago, his dental issues led to internal bleeding that caused his hemoglobin level to drop to 4. He spent two months in the ICU and needed six pints of blood to survive. They urgently need to get his teeth removed and dentures fitted so he can eat without pain, even with Medicaid, they are looking at around $11,500 in out-of-pocket costs for the dental, came up with that price to make sure it covers the cost of everything. We also desperately need prescription glasses and eye exams to improve our daily lives and overall quality of life. We have a loan to repay for a refrigerator—a basic necessity—and we need to replace the lost food items. These are all essential expenses that are out of reach right now. We are relying on disability benefits, which barely cover our basic needs. We are exhausted from feeling run down and being in pain every day.
