Grains and pulses, onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, tea, and coffee are prohibited.
Wake up during Brahma-muhūrta.
As much as possible, chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahāmantra.
You may consume fruits (watermelon, muskmelon, and jackfruit are prohibited), milk, potato, raw banana, sweet potato, yam, dry fruits (dates are prohibited), sago (sabudana), buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta), ghee, pepper powder, rock salt (saindhava lavaṇa), lemon juice, peanuts (groundnuts), buttermilk, coconut water, and curd.
Spices, sea salt, jaggery, sugarcane juice, and honey are prohibited.
Eat as little as possible; if you are unable to manage, you may eat multiple times.
Observe Brahmacharya (celibacy).
On Dvādaśī, it is best to break the fast (pāraṇa) as early as possible after sunrise (preferably before 9 a.m.).
The food taken for pāraṇa should first be offered to Lord Kṛṣṇa (Viṣṇu) and then consumed.
Sleeping during the daytime is prohibited.
Homemade paneer (prepared by curdling milk with lemon juice) may be consumed.
Ekādaśī should be like a festival—an opportunity given to us for the removal of sins. One should eat carefully without torturing the body or frightening family members. Therefore, spend the day joyfully, thinking, “Today is a festival for me,” and pass the time in remembrance and meditation of the Lord.
