I was really expecting watcher to be much better than downpour, at least in terms of feeling more like rain world. Downpour is by no means bad, but its mod origins are as clear as day and not in a good way. There are massive inconsistencies and i was hoping watcher would be closer to what i loved about rain world.
It… was not. In fact, it felt more like a mod than downpour ever did. I really wanted to like it, but the more i think about it, i just cant.
The best way i can describe the experience is that it’s a whole bunch of mostly great ideas, loosely stitched together with little cohesion. One of rain word’s best aspects is its world building. Its a highly environmental story telling type game. All the of new regions feel very one note with no connections and no information that you could gleam with any substance. There’s no moon to tell you about its world or even whats happening.
The story is so muddy and vague that I felt like it was a fever dream the entire way through. I’ve seen some people praise this for being similar to base game but they’re straight up WRONG. There’s cold hard facts you can find all over the game, via pearls and items you give to moon. Vanilla is certainly vague in some areas but it at least has a story.
And also, because everything is stitched together by shoddy portals that make the screen hard to read, you struggle to know where you are or where you’re even supposed to go. You have to memorize portals that won’t even show up on the map like gates do. (Not to mention how many there are) Theres no iggy to guide you in the general direction you wanna be. One wrong step and you can be lost for hours. Its horrible. I think people mistake ‘handholding’ as literally anything that gives you direction.
For a mod about exploration, it sure as hell doesn’t reward you very much for exploring. I felt as if i constantly found myself going in dead ends with little purpose for being there. The most and i mean most egregious example of this is the outer rim. The west side is very important, yes. But then you have 3/4s of the other side which has absolutely nothing in it. Not even creatures to interact with, its just parkour which was unusually difficult for areas that were there for dick diddly. It actively punishes you for exploring by forcing you to go back to an earlier area in the SAME REGION.
I really hope the future updates give more substance to the dlc. Because as it is right now, it’s just a glorified modpack with ‘oooo there could be some interesting story happening’ without ever actually giving you one.
