That's a big deal for me... and here's the reason why:
In my younger days, songwriting was something that was fun for me. But then my perfectionism and workaholism extinguished all the joy out of it. So, I stopped. I limited my musical activity to making "Pop Danthology" mashups just once a year and DJ'ing from time to time - neither brought me all that much joy.
More than ten years later, I have a wife and two children, and still look at making music as a chore. But last Easter, I happened to capture my daughter repeating a cute line. While editing a vlog with that clip, the thought popped into my head, "this could be a cute song!" and so I spent one weekend turning that line into a simple song (the fastest I've ever written and recorded a song - no perfectionism, no workaholism... just a whole lotta fun).
Unlike Pop Danthologies, which include so many popular and relatable elements that much of the world has attachment to, I am aware that the content of the lyrics, the voices, and the visuals of this personal piece mean nothing to anybody else. But it means the world to me. I now, as long as I live, have a beautiful part of my daughter, who I love so much, immortalized in a cute song and video.
This whole process and my priceless reward helped me re-experience the joy of songwriting. And I can feel my interest in songwriting growing again as I smile and think about all the future cute lines my children might say that I might be lucky enough to capture and turn into a song.
Who knows? This might be the beginning of me making music again that benefits other people too.
As a 2nd generation Korean-Canadian 🇰🇷🇨🇦 raised by South Korean immigrant parents, I had an identity crisis as an adult. I found that, no matter where I was, whether I was living in Canada or Korea, I was always seen and treated like a foreigner. This is my story of how I developed my identity issues and how I overcame them.
Second teaser of Pop Danthology 2010s up: www.tiktok.com/@wethekims/video/676105160200356173…. Follow us on Tik Tok @WeTheKims - we'll be releasing a teaser every week before the launch of Pop Danthology 2010s.
I've just released the first teaser (vm.tiktok.com/upD6Y9/) straight outta Pop Danthology 2010s. My wife and I did a little lip sync and dance to make it more fit for Tik Tok 😜. Follow us on Tik Tok @WeTheKims - we'll be releasing a teaser every week before the launch of Pop Danthology 2010s.
I'm planning to make a Pop Danthology Q&A video to answer questions like "How long does it take to make a Pop Danthology?" "What software do you use to make Pop Danthology?" and so on... I'd love to get your help on what other questions I should answer. Leave them here please!
