As of March 2026, the HAL Tejas Mk2 project is entering a critical phase as it transitions from design and component fabrication toward its first flight.
🚀 Latest Project Updates (2026)
First Flight Timeline: Ground testing and high-speed taxi trials are the current focus, with the first prototype's maiden flight expected within the 2026–2027 window.
Engine Integration: The project is powered by the GE F414-INS6 engine. A significant milestone is the ongoing deal for 80% technology transfer, allowing these engines to be manufactured within India.
Production Readiness: HAL has already begun the fabrication of the first prototype (LSP-1), with specialized sub-assemblies currently being integrated.
🛠️ Key Technical Specifications
The Mk2 is a 4.5 Generation Medium Weight Fighter (MWF) that represents a massive leap over the current Mk1A:
Canard-Delta Wing: Unlike the Mk1, the Mk2 features close-coupled canards. These improve maneuverability and allow the aircraft to carry a much heavier payload.
Enhanced Payload: It has 11 hardpoints (compared to 8 on the Mk1), allowing it to carry heavy standoff weapons like the Scalp, Crystal Maze, and BrahMos-NG.
Advanced Avionics: It is equipped with an indigenous Uttam AESA Radar and an Internal Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, making it much more survivable in contested airspace.
* Network Centric: Features a "Smart Cockpit" with a large area display (LAD) and a digital flight control computer, reducing pilot workload during high-intensity missions.
🇮🇳 Strategic Importance
The Tejas Mk2 is designed to replace the aging Mirage 2000, Jaguar, and MiG-29 fleets of the Indian Air Force. It serves as the "backbone" of the IAF's future combat strength until the 5th-generation AMCA arrives.
