Jagannath Snan Yatra – The Divine Bathing Ceremony

Jagannath Snan Yatra is celebrated every year on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Jyestha. This year, it will be observed on 10 June 2025. On this day, Lord Jagannath, along with His elder brother Baladev and sister Subhadra Devi, receives a grand ceremonial bathing with 108 pots of sanctified water.

1. This divine festival is observed to give everyone, including those who cannot enter the sanctum, the chance to have darshan of the Lord.

2. The bathing ceremony symbolizes purification and preparation for the Lord’s grand journey during the Rath Yatra.

3. After the Abhishek, the deities assume Hati Besha (elephant form), which signifies their playful, merciful mood.

4. Following the Snan Yatra, the deities enter Anavasara – a resting period where They are said to be recovering from the bathing ceremony.

5. The first darshan after Anavasara happens during Rath Yatra, when the Lord embarks on His majestic chariot ride.

Snan Yatra prepares devotees for the spiritual journey of Rath Yatra, and reminds us of the Lord’s unlimited compassion.
