So, I just got an email from CD Baby stating that they won't release Los de AI's next album because they "will no longer distribute AI music..."

While I understand the concerns that some may have about the role of AI in music, I believe this decision unfairly dismisses a legitimate form of artistic expression and risks stifling innovation.

As someone who has released traditional albums, written dozens of songs, and plays real instruments, I can say with confidence that using AI in music creation does not invalidate the work, effort, or creativity behind it. On the contrary, AI is simply another tool, much like a synthesizer, drum machine, or digital audio workstation once was when first introduced. Each of those innovations was initially met with skepticism, yet they ultimately became indispensable to modern music.

The heart of music is human intention. Whether it’s strummed on a guitar, composed on staff paper, or generated through AI with human direction and editing, the end product still carries meaning, emotion, and artistic purpose. AI does not erase the role of the artist—it expands what is possible. To dismiss AI-generated work is to dismiss a growing segment of creative exploration that resonates with audiences and challenges traditional boundaries in the best way.

CD Baby’s refusal to distribute AI-assisted music sends a troubling message: that certain forms of creativity are “less valid” simply because the tools are new. This is inconsistent with the company’s history of championing independent artists and giving them a platform when the traditional gatekeepers would not. If the concern is about copyright or originality, there are solutions: policies around disclosure, labeling, and rights management can address those issues without shutting the door entirely.

Art has always evolved with technology. To deny AI a place in music distribution is to deny artists the freedom to experiment, innovate, and be heard. I urge CD Baby to reconsider this policy and embrace the diversity of modern music-making, rather than drawing arbitrary lines that exclude artists who are simply using the tools of today.
