I have been considering doing a re-read of The Odyssey this year, since Christopher Nolan got the absolutely insane idea of adapting it for the big screen. But I got the idea of doing it as a buddy read perhaps, with you all, my Beloved Audience. Perhaps put my Discord to good use while I'm at it. But I wanted to check with you all first. Happy birthday to one Robert E. Howard, who is as influential to the genre of fantasy as we know it today as JRR Tolkien is. His visceral energy and dark romanticism has inspired countless writers and people throughout the years. There have been many pulp writers over the years, some are particularly great. But Robert E. Howard stands heads and shoulders above them as the greatest of them all. @RobertE.HowardFoundation made a wonderful video assembling a bunch of BookTubers, writers, scholars, and fans to commemorate his life. If you're an American like me, you'll know that things have been crazy lately. If you are as concerned about individual liberty and civil liberty as I, you should be deeply concerned by the increasing abuses of power by our government. @AndySmithMN made a video about some of the egregious abuses of power that have been conducted by ICE in his home state. It's horrible and shocking. But Andy has shown a remarkable amount of bravery when discussing these touchy issues.
Often I am critical of politicians in our country for being all talk and not really doing anything to solve the identity crisis our country is in at this moment. But if more of them were like Andy, if more of them were as courageous and caring, perhaps we'd be in a different world than we're in now.
