Although developed from an endodontic perspective, 4ROD extends beyond traditional pulpal and periapical diagnosis by incorporating the related subjects in periodontics, restorative, prosthodontics, and orthodontics into the diagnostic process. This approach encourages multidisciplinary clinical reasoning while maintaining endodontic diagnosis as its clinical foundation.

Dental education should extend beyond the dental school walls.
The AbouRass Endodontics Academy is launching an international initiative to connect motivated dental students interested in evidence-based diagnosis, diagnostic clinical reasoning, and the diagnostic aspects of comprehensive patient care.

The Student Ambassador Program will bring together students from dental schools worldwide who want to help build small learning communities within their institutions.

Student Ambassadors will be encouraged to:
• Facilitate informal clinical and diagnostic discussions with fellow students
• Introduce colleagues to evidence-based educational resources
• Discuss clinical cases, diagnostic reasoning, and treatment planning
• Bring student questions, perspectives, and educational feedback to the Academy
• Connect with Student Ambassadors from other dental schools and countries

Ambassadors are not expected to be teachers or experts.

They are students helping other students question, discuss, think, and learn.

I am pleased to announce the publication of the final article in our four-part interview series:

The 4R Operational Diagnosis Protocol: Part 4—R4: Restorative and Tooth Structure Assessment

R4 addresses a frequently overlooked reality: endodontic diagnosis cannot be completed by evaluating only the pulp and periapical tissues.

The clinician must also assess the existing restorations and the remaining tooth structure—including restorative quality, cracks, discoloration, tooth wear, developmental anomalies, alignment, and occlusion. These findings may explain the origin of disease, influence treatment decisions, and determine the tooth’s long-term prognosis.

After decades of clinical practice, teaching, research, and continuous refinement, I am pleased to announce the first published release of the 4R Operational Diagnosis (4ROD) Protocol.

This publication represents much more than two articles.
It introduces a comprehensive, structured diagnostic framework to guide clinicians in collecting, interpreting, and integrating diagnostic information before treatment begins.

The protocol consists of four sequential components:
• R1 – Patient Report & Rapport: transforming the patient's story into organized clinical data through structured communication and examination.
• R2 – Radiographic Findings: introducing the 10 Areas of Diagnostic Interest (10 ADI), a systematic approach to interpreting periapical radiographs.

My sincere hope is that this protocol will stimulate discussion, encourage critical thinking, and contribute to more comprehensive, biologically based diagnoses in endodontics.
