Born to a Swedish mother and a Japanese father, Maia began her career as a background singer for Annika Norlin's indie pop project Hello Saferide. In 2007, she released her self-produced debut album Though, I'm Just Me, featuring hit singles "And I Found This Boy" and "Gothenburg."

In 2010, Maia moved to Japan for a break from music but returned with a successful career there. In 2011, she scored major hits with "Boom!" and "It Doesn’t Stop," with "Boom!" becoming an anthem after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.

In 2023, Maia released her eighth album If This Is The End, It Sure Is A Beautiful One, and continues to release music and a documentary in 2024. Singing in Swedish, English, and Japanese, Maia remains committed to expressing herself in all three languages.
