But the world outside tells us we need to keep moving on the hamster wheel earning worthiness and striving for something from outside of ourselves.

They are all equally valuable and equally important. The shadow only becomes a problem when we pretend we don't have one. That's the moment when it's going to start gaining steam towards making itself known, in a likely ugly and unhealthy way.
