ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: John White, the governor of the Roanoke Island returned from a supply trip in Englad to find the entire settlement empty. The only clue of their disappearnace was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a palisade that had been built around the settlement. While archaeologists have found data that points to extreme drought conditions, there is still no indication of where the settlers went to. To this day, the settlers fate remains unknown.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: The second atomic bomb, Fat Man, was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Originally, the US was going to drop the bomb on August 11, but due to incliment weather they moved it. After a series of mishaps, they dropped the bomb at 11:01 and it exploded at 11:02. An estimated 60,000-80,000 people died due to the explosion or the after effects of radiation, burns, and other injuries. This effectively forced Japan to surreunder.
