The Argungu Fishing Festival is a vibrant celebration in Kebbi State, Nigeria, with deep historical roots.
Origin: The festival began in 1934 to mark the end of long-standing hostilities between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom. It started as a peace-building event and has evolved into a cultural showcase.

The Festival Today: Traditionally held annually, the festival features thousands of fishermen competing to catch the largest fish using traditional methods. It also includes cultural displays, music, and dance, attracting tourists worldwide. However, environmental challenges like climate change have affected the Matan Fada River's water levels, leading to concerns about the festival's future. In February 2025, the 61st festival was rescheduled to 2026 to allow for necessary repairs and environmental assessments.
