Indian captain Rohit Sharma “rested” himself from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney after poor form, scoring just 31 runs in five innings across three Tests. His struggles with his shot playing and India's overall performance raised doubts about his Test cricket future. Former Australian player Mark Taylor argued Rohit was effectively “dropped,” questioning why it wasn't explicitly stated. “A captain doesn’t opt out of a deciding Test,” Taylor said, adding that Rohit’s absence due to poor form is normal in professional sports. Shubman Gill replaced him in the playing XI. Jasprit Bumrah, who had previously led during Rohit's paternity leave, stepped in as captain in his place. At the toss, Bumrah said, “Our captain showed leadership by opting to rest,” highlighting team unity. With the series on the line, Bumrah aims to guide India to a series-leveling win and retain the trophy.
Nikita Singhania’s Arrest and Her Attempt to Evade Police
Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of Atul Subhash, was arrested and sent to judicial custody in connection with her husband’s suicide case. According to police sources, Nikita used WhatsApp calls to avoid being detected by police surveillance and frequently changed her location to evade arrest. Nikita was apprehended in Gurugram, Haryana, by the Bengaluru Police. Her mother, Nisha, and brother, Anurag, were also detained in Prayagraj. While on the run, Nikita attempted to secure bail in the case. Atul, her husband, had taken his own life at his residence in Bengaluru the previous week, leaving behind a 24-page suicide note and a video over an hour long, detailing the alleged harassment he suffered at the hands of his wife and her family.
How the Police Tracked Nikita
After learning that Karnataka Police were closing in, Nikita and her family locked their homes in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, and went into hiding. Notices were pasted on their doors, instructing them to appear within three days. A special team compiled a list of their close relatives and friends suspected of maintaining contact with them. Police surveillance focused on these individuals, but tracking Nikita proved challenging as she exclusively used WhatsApp calls. However, her plan unraveled when she made a crucial mistake—she placed a phone call to a close relative. This single call tipped off the police, who traced the location to a cell tower in Gurugram. Upon reaching the area, officers discovered Nikita was staying in a PG accommodation in the Rail Vihar locality. She was swiftly detained.
Arrest of Her Mother and Brother
During her interrogation, Nikita was compelled to contact her mother and brother, allowing the police to trace their locations. The duo was apprehended from Jhunsi town in Uttar Pradesh. All three were taken into custody and transported to Bengaluru.
Police Interrogation and Custody of the Child
The arrested individuals were questioned extensively during the nine-hour transit to Bengaluru. Meanwhile, arrangements were made to ensure the safety of Nikita’s two-year-old son, who was placed in the care of a relative. Atul’s family has since demanded custody of the child, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure his safe return to their family
