I just got done with the fraud layer in Ultrakill so here are my thoughts.
*SPOILERS* so go play it if you have not!⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
Let’s start with the positives. I think the biggest strength is the level designs. A lot happens in the environments. I love the fact that everything is so trippy and mind messing every level of the layers. A lot of people criticize that aspect of the level for that reason but genuinely I love it because of that. Some areas shift and turn in wild and geometrical ways and sometimes they through in some small sections from other layers that you have already experienced playing it. Like for example one of the sections of the Level takes you back to the area in gluttony where you fight Gabriel. I’ll get back to that part later because it’s going to be important later. I also like some of the Metrovania sections in some of the levels. They are very trippy sometimes (Like the rest of the layer) but it also makes room for some lore segments. I personally did not get to consume a lot of lore in this layer because I’m mostly a guy who always prefers Gameplay over Story so I’m probably going to watch analysis videos on the lore. The OST is great as always. I’m just waiting for it to come out on Spotify so I can keep on listening to it. The enemy’s are also interesting to fight. Obviously they have the classic enemy’s like filth, swords machine, and Maurice. But also have enemy’s like providence who look like actual depictions of angels (dear god😱). Oh and remember when I was talking about the section in gluttony? Well we fight a new angel in that section named Power. In this layer we take a deeper look into the angels and who they are. And power is one of them. They are smaller more broken version of angels with a feminine voice even tho they are genderless in the lore. A very interesting character that I really like. Which is great because we need more angels in the lore not just Gabriel. Also I did not notice the statue in the dark room was God. HOW DID I MISS THAT. Now lets talk about a small negative which is this layer is the laggiest layer in the whole game. And this layer has a few small bugs like for example. When the environment switches it sometime clips you out of the level and fall into the void. It’s not a big deal it’s not like the game was rushed or anything, and the layer just released so I’m pretty sure they will patch them soon. And now for a real negative witch is the final boss of the layer Greyson. It’s not bad but compared to the earthmover and Minotaur boss it’s a little bit of a disappointment. The new mechanic that controls your gravity is not bad. It’s a cool idea, but I wish they could’ve done more with the boss besides that. I wish they would trick into thinking that the boss is over like the Minotaur because the entire layer was all about tricking the player into thinking to level is over. But no sadly it just ends like a normal boss. Overall despite some of the negatives, the positives out way them. This is one of the best layers that we had in a long time. And hakita and his team did an amazing job working on this. Overall 9/10 amazing layer.
This might piss a lot of people off, so be prepared, this is just my opinion.
For the record, I am a five nights at Freddy’s fan. I grew up playing the games. I love the characters and I watched hours and hours of MatPat videos figuring out the lore so you don’t need to say *it’s for the fans* because as a fan, I didn’t like the movie and I really wanted to. I appreciated Scott for responding to the fans and putting a lot of fan service into the movie, but I felt like he put too much fan service that it felt like it lost some of the plot. I will say I think this movie does a great job with the designs of the animatronics cause they look amazing don’t get me wrong. I think every single animatronic and the way it was built and set up was amazing and I respect the studio for working really hard on it. I think they did Charlie’s character pretty good and I’m glad they brought Henry into the movie, but I wish I could see Henry More in some scenes. I think the dream sequences with Vanessa is pretty cool too and very interesting. Too bad we didn’t get a lot. I wish I could see more of them. The worst thing in my opinion that they did was Michael’s character. Michael Afton is my favorite character in all of Fnaf and the fact that they turned him into a generic side villain that wants to keep his father‘s legacy alive just felt like a slap in the face for me. Before this movie came out I had a theory if they would reveal that Mike Schmidt was actually William Afton‘s son. It would’ve been a really great twist because if you’ve seen in the first one when William says Michael Schmidt He looks at Mike very closely, and Mike Schmidt is Michael Afton in the games, but it kind of makes sense on how that theory wouldn’t make sense because why would William Afton take Garrett and this movie isn’t all about the games and it’s different from the original universe. but sadly that theory got busted and I got pretty upset. Some of the references were pretty cool as well like the Fnaf 2 gameplay with the masks and I liked the shadow Bonnie appearance. And I think the voice actors for the toy animatronics did a great job, Megan Fox, Matt Pat and Kellen Goff Did amazing. The one thing that can technically ruin your time with the movie has to be the pacing. They jump at things really fast and sometimes takes things really slow. For example, the dream sequences with Vanessa they were slow, but you can understand them. And another example, the middle all the way to the ending of the movie with Vanessa escaping the pizzeria, the animatronics being in the neighborhood and the ending with mike trying to calm Charlie down with the music box felt really rushed. Overall, I didn’t like this movie and I am very sad that I didn’t cause I really really wanted to as a fan of the franchise. I wouldn’t call myself a critic because it makes me feel like I’m always negative and I obviously don’t agree with 11% on rotten tomatoes, because rotten tomatoes should never review a game adaptation at all. If you are a fan of fnaf and you really like the movie I’m happy for you. This movie in a way is pretty divisive with the Fnaf community and I’m on the negative side. These are all just my opinion. And I hope you have a lot more fun with the movie than I have.
