Java, 1942, WW2 POWs
Many of these men survived one nightmare... only to enter another.
Some were sailors from the USS Houston and HMAS Perth. After their ships were sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait, survivors swam for hours through burning oil, floating wreckage, and shark-infested waters. Some reached Java only to be captured. Others were pulled from the sea by Japanese ships and became POWs immediately.
After Java fell in March 1942, thousands of Allied prisoners were confined in camps across the island. The earliest camps were difficult, but many were still far better than what lay ahead. As the war dragged on, thousands were sent to the Thailand–Burma Railway, where starvation, disease, and forced labor claimed countless lives.
The next story on my channel comes from one of those camps. A POW doctor risked another beating by returning after dark to treat an injured prisoner.

General Douglas MacArthur made huge blunders following the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was obvious to everyone on base that the Philippines would be attacked next by the Japanese, but he didn't even tell his men that Pearl had been attacked. They heard it on the radio. Other blunders followed. and yet the man received the Medal of Honor. Several Generals felt that he didn't deserve the medal. He did nothing.
