A $1,000 head start on your child’s financial future? Here is what families should know about Trump Accounts.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER SIGNING UP?

Parents of children born January 1, 2025–December 31, 2028: Eligible U.S. citizen children with valid Social Security numbers can receive a one-time $1,000 federal contribution. Enrollment and account activation are required—it is not automatic.

Families with older children: An account can generally be established for a child with a valid Social Security number who will still be under 18 at the end of the enrollment year. Children born before 2025 do not qualify for the federal $1,000, but may qualify for employer or charitable contributions.

Grandparents: Coordinate with the child’s parent or guardian about opening and funding an account. Employees: Ask HR whether your employer offers a contribution benefit.

HOW TO SIGN UP

Visit lnkd.in/g885hMkQ and sign in or create an IRS online account using ID.me.

Complete IRS Form 4547. Have your child’s Social Security number, date of birth and address ready. Request the $1,000 pilot contribution if eligible.
Follow the account-activation instructions after your election is processed.

Access the official app through trumpaccounts.gov/.

Already submitted Form 4547 with your taxes? Check your election status and complete activation rather than filing a duplicate.

UNDERSTAND THE RULES

For 2026, the annual contribution limit is generally $5,000 per child, including family and employer contributions. The federal $1,000 does not count toward that limit.

These are tax-deferred investment accounts—not tax-free savings accounts. Family contributions are not deductible. Ordinary withdrawals are generally prohibited before January 1 of the year the child turns 18. Afterward, traditional IRA tax rules generally apply, including potential early-withdrawal penalties.

My perspective: Checking eligibility for government or employer funding is one decision. Choosing where to invest additional family dollars is another. Compare the options—including 529 plans and, when eligible, custodial Roth IRAs—with your broader financial plan.

Share this with a parent or grandparent who could benefit.
