Here is an article written by Harvey Milk about abuse by police in the Castro. Around this time, the gay community was demanding that police protect bar patrons walking home from the bar. There had been a spike in violence, and the police didn't seem to care. What I love about the article is that you get a true sense of Milk's brio.
Here's the unedited picture of the McKeller painting. Historians believe that, like the Madam X portrait, McKeller's painting was in Sargent's studio until he died in 1925. The painting was then passed with Sargent's estate finally being acquired by the Museum of Art Boston, where it remained archived until 2020.
Hotel Astor was a hotel on Times Square in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Built in 1905 and expanded in 1909–1910 for the Astor family, by the time of the Chicken and the Bull scams, its rooms and bar were prime meeting spots for gay men, and closeted men to one another, and for sex workers to ply their trade.
A glimpses into how seriously the media and the society at large took queer bashing. This pithy cartoon from Private Eye, 27 March 1970, drawn by Colin Wheeler.
