Today is World Automobile Day, marking the 140-year anniversary of when Karl Benz applied for a patent for the first practical petrol-powered car, changing how humans move forever. This paved the way for the creation of the Voiturette 1CV, Renault’s first automobile, only a short 12 years later, in 1898. It was the first vehicle in history to have a direct drive gearbox, allowing power to be transferred without chains or belts, building on a legacy that continues to this day.
