Jaywalker Pictures

Procreate tutorials, digital art and tech for creative people.

Hi, I'm Jay - A digital designer and illustrator based in Sydney, Australia. I teach people how to draw with Procreate and an iPad.

Jaywalker Pictures originally started as a travel photo blog called Jaywalking, a pun on my nickname and the idea of taking a walk to see the world. I then created this channel sharing my art, tutorials, stories and art journey - Thus Jaywalker Pictures was born.

Hey guys,

Right now I'm working on a video series that teaches beginners how to draw from complete scratch in Procreate.

If you haven't seen part 1, watch it here: https://youtu.be/KtAI8xNMv_8

Running a bit late on part 2, but it'll be out Tuesday 16th!

Hey guys, semi-new painting!

Did this a few weeks ago in response to the prompt - "rest" for my Monthly Drawing Challenge over on Patreon - patreon.com/jaywalkerpictures

It was a real breakthrough, for a few reasons:

1. It took relatively little time, about 5 hours without having to redraw/fix things (getting stuck can go up to 20 hrs).
2. I drew this from reference and am getting the hang of interpreting the world into my own style instead photocopying pixel by pixel.
3. I used two custom brushes, one for the foliage and another for the building windows. People say tools don't matter, but I disagree, good knowledge of your tools enhances your abilities.
4. I think I finally settled on a style - my characters are drawn with line art and backgrounds painted without lines. I've always flip flopped, but moving forward, this really works.

It's not perfect but I am super happy with it and it is progress for me.

The weird thing is, I never intentionally planned to make these breakthroughs, I was just trying to draw something without any expectations and this happened.

So whatever you do, keep drawing and having fun.

Hey guys, new painting!

This was done in response to the prompt "Indoor" which is part of my Monthly Drawing Challenge for May. You can participate by following on Patreon and submitting on Discord:

In this painting I really focused on nailing the lighting caused by a window and getting the exposure of both indoor and outdoors just right.

Figuring out color and light can be pretty complicated, but this reminded me of an easy to understand experience.

We’ve all used a smart phone camera to focus and expose for a subject by tapping. Indoors, the camera adjusts to the ambient interior light, blowing out the windows.

But if we tap the window to expose for outdoors, the foreground and indoor objects would black out and the outdoor scene would be in focus.

This piece isn’t perfect but thinking about painting thru the lens of photography has really helped improve my colours.

Hey guys, here is the sketch from my last video.

Zooming in to the individual lines, there is nothing complex about it. The lines are wobbly, brush strokes loose and rough. But believe it or not, I truly think this is the best drawing I've ever done.

I've done more complex pieces, highly rendered pieces, pieces that took far longer than this one.

But when I did those, I felt like I was emulating a style, pushing pixels in trial and error or rigidly sticking to art rules rather than truly freely drawing and painting.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying throw out all the rules and become an abstract artist (but if that's what you want to do, go for it). Rather, don't feel restricted or paralysed by rules and detail. Instead, establish principles or guidelines and let your natural line show, in all it's ugliness - within them.

Just wanted to share how excited I am about this new level I'm reaching. Hope you're all doing well.

New painting!

My typical approach is to draw a sketch, capture every single detail, paint and organise each object layer by layer.

This is logical and 'clean'.

But as you draw more complex scenes, this becomes too burdensome and ruins the experience of painting.

For this painting I allowed myself to let go of any expectation of a polished finish (and organised layers lol) and just focused on light/vibes.

This is a real street in Tokyo, near Shibuya crossing. Done in response to the prompt "Light" as part of my Monthly Drawing Challenge over on Patreon:

Hey guys, here are some sketches from my last video.

If you have purchased my Procreate brushes, thank you, I hope they bring you many happy hours of sketching. I'm a relatively small channel and rarely get sponsors, so you're not only getting a useful tool but also directly supporting the channel.

I'll be doing more urban sketching in future along with my usual tutorials so subscribe and turn on notifications to know when a new video drops!

One thing I've struggled with as an artist is consistency. Maintaining a regular drawing habit is harder than it seems, even if it is an enjoyable hobby.

So I was a little wary of starting this, let alone talk about it on my socials. But so far so good.

I'm now up to month 5 in my Monthly Drawing Challenge. Swipe to the end to see last month's prompt - Aqua.

If you want to join:
1. Follow for free on Patreon - patreon.com/jaywalkerpictures
2. Draw this month's brief (it drops the first week of every month)
3. Share on my Discord - discord.gg/RKgVnKv

Whether you are an experienced artist or beginner, it's a great way to engage your creativity and unwind.

It's only a handful of people now, but hopefully it will become a fun community filled with like-minded artists.

Hope to see you there!
