In 2011, Hunter Leggitt Studio temporarily relocated from Los Angeles to the high desert near Lake Isabella, CA to design and build a custom, highly crafted, modern cabin. Designed to regularly sleep it’s family of 5, but also be flexible enough to comfortably host a total of 10 guests, the 510 Cabin serves as a tranquil and compact weekend retreat for the client, a busy Santa Monica-based family.
Responding to strict budget limitations and the studio’s interest to create what it called a Design/Build/+ educational experience, partially inspired by Samuel Mockbee’s Rural Studio, HLS opened the construction effort up to student apprentices. Posting a simple flyer on several architectural job boards, the studio received hundreds of applications from architecture students all over the world. Requiring only a tool belt, tape measure, hammer, and great attitude, the studio selected seven students with little to no formal experience to move out to the jobsite and help build the project.

Portable cabin is a year-round living space made of two adapted shipping containers. Investors are a couple of brave people who have contact with temporary architecture and are interested in searching for interesting and difficult to adapt spaces. The implementation of a portable cabin and remote workplace turned out to be a great response to the present times. The facility is currently located at the community garden next to the Szelagowski Park in Poznan, and in the future, it is to go to the forest and ultimately stand on the water. Containers were fully prepared in the production hall, while its transport and assembly on the plot took one day, and only the last internal finishing works remained on site.

Black Perch is the extension and refurbishment of an existing, 40 year old bungalow, located in a tight urban fabric, using most of the permissible ground cover before the extension was added. As no other space was available, the extension is placed on top of the existing, split level building. It adds a large living room with a kitchenette and a study cum guest room to the top of the house. All spaces overlook a large open to sky courtyard, which steps down the existing sloping roof.
Alien-like this clean, black cube is perching on top of the old structure, as if landed from the sky, pushing on all sides up to the margin line, cantilevering far over the entrance side of the old house. All four outer sides of the cube are covered with movable wooden louvers, which allow the user to regulate the ingress of sunlight, and views from and to the surrounding.

In 2020, The Ranch Mine received a very unusual project inquiry, which was the first in the firm’s history. The scope of the inquiry was not unusual: a new modern home to replace the ranch house in the Arcadia neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, which they had outgrown while having 3 children over the past 8 years.
The unusual part was the request for it to be a surprise for the homeowner’s wife after the couple had started and stopped twice with other professionals. This seemed risky, but the gamble paid off as the surprise was met with excitement, and the family finally achieved the dream home they had always wanted but were never able to accomplish: a 2 story, multigenerational contemporary family home fitting their personalities and lifestyle.
