India Post Unveils 'DIGIPIN': A Digital Addressing Revolution
The Department of Posts has introduced 'DIGIPIN' (Digital Postal Index Number), a groundbreaking digital addressing system designed to enhance delivery accuracy and efficiency across India. Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, DIGIPIN divides the country into 4m x 4m grid units, each assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code derived from its geographic coordinates. This system aims to bridge the gap between traditional postal addresses and precise location identification, facilitating improved service delivery, especially in rural and remote areas
Unlike the conventional six-digit PIN code, which identifies broader areas, DIGIPIN offers a more granular and accurate location reference. The system is designed to be offline-compatible, ensuring accessibility even in areas with limited internet connectivity. Additionally, DIGIPIN can be integrated into navigation systems, enhancing emergency response and logistics operations
To refine the system, the Department of Posts released a beta version of DIGIPIN on July 19, 2024, inviting public feedback until September 22, 2024. This initiative underscores India's commitment to digital transformation and geospatial governance, aligning with the National Geospatial Policy 2022
