Hi, everyone! I’ll be having a live class tonight, August 29th at 9PM KST :) The class is designed for both beginner and intermediate learners, and our topic will be a Korean pronunciation phenomenon called the “tensification of ㄱ.”
You may have noticed that ㄱ is sometimes pronounced as ㄲ even when there doesn’t seem to be an obvious consonant assimilation rule involved.
For example:
- 여권 (passport) is pronounced 여꿘, not 여권.
- 충고 (advice) is pronounced just as it is written: 충고. But 창고 (warehouse) is pronounced 창꼬, not 창고.
This phenomenon is called the tensification of ㄱ, or ㄱ 된소리화. In some cases, there is a clear rule that explains why it happens. In many other cases, though, it's simply because pronouncing it that way feels more natural and familiar to native Korean speakers. In other words, the famous meme “It’s because that’s why” is sometimes the only explanation 😭
Tensification can occur with all Korean consonants that have tense forms: ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅅ, and ㅈ. In today’s class, we’ll focus specifically on words in which ㄱ is pronounced as ㄲ. (You may be surprised by just how many there are!😊)
We’ll learn lots of new words, so you’re welcome to join regardless of your level. We’ll also do a variety of activities, including dictation and listening comprehension exercises.
