Sysadmin102 Fam,
There won’t be a video this weekend, and I want to be honest with you all—I’m seriously considering shutting down the channel.
To protect myself legally, I had to form an LLC in California, which costs $800 per year, plus an additional $200 for a city business license. These expenses come entirely out of my own pocket, and unfortunately, the revenue from YouTube ads and Google Ads isn’t enough to cover them.
I started this channel as a passion project to help beginners get into networking, cybersecurity, and ethical hacking. But the reality is, financially, it just doesn’t make sense. Some viewers complain about the ads, even though they’re watching my videos and reading my blog for free. What’s ironic is that I even taught you how to use ad filtering with OPNsense UnboundDNS—which directly impacts my ad revenue—but I did it anyway because I believe in sharing knowledge.
I’ve considered sponsorships, but I don’t want anyone influencing my content or narrative. On top of that, my wife isn’t thrilled with how much time I put into this, and I can’t blame her. Some might assume this is my main source of income, but it’s not—I’d earn far more working a second job than making these videos.
I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I wanted to share where I stand. I truly appreciate those who have supported the channel, and I’ll keep you posted on what happens next.
