The Tapes Archive

The Tapes Archive is a home for long-form documentaries about the music, albums and artists that shaped hard rock and heavy metal.

The channel features deep dives into landmark albums, including Black Sabbath's Sabotage, Master of Reality, Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; the five-part series on Van Halen's 1984; and artist portraits such as The Evolving Mind of Neil Peart. It also includes occasional retrospectives on classic films, including The King of Comedy and Point Blank.

The Tapes Archive is also home to a collection of rare, never-before-heard interviews with Ozzy Osbourne, David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and other icons, recorded during the 1980s and '90s.

Created by Emmy Award-winning documentarian Alan Berry, these films are independent passion projects produced in his spare time.

The Tapes Archive

My next Black Sabbath chapter is coming.

A 5-part documentary series on Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. This is by far my most extensive look at a Sabbath album. Six months of research and a 40-page script. Episode 1 will be dropping soon.

Thanks to everyone who’s watched my previous Sabb docs—Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabotage—and the Frank Zappa one. 🤘🏻

The Tapes Archive

This crazy photo was taken by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Blair. I had it professionally colorized in 2018. It's from my documentary called Dead Man's Line. This was the historical backdrop for the new Gus Van Sant film Dead Man's Wire, starring Al Pacino and Bill Skarsgård.

You can watch the trailer and full documentary on my channel. https://youtu.be/gQZMFksVFhU?si=NY4xs...

The Tapes Archive

A lot of you found this channel through the Black Sabbath, Van Halen, or Tarantino videos I’ve posted. But before The Tapes Archive existed, I spent years making a feature documentary called Dead Man’s Line. When it was finally released, it didn’t really take off. That was tough—but it also pushed me to rethink what I wanted to do. That’s when I decided to create this channel.

And now, in one of those full-circle moments, that same story from my documentary is the basis of Gus Van Sant’s upcoming film Dead Man’s Wire, starring Al Pacino, Bill Skarsgård, Cary Elwes, Colman Domingo, and others. My documentary ended up being part of the historical foundation for the film during its development.

Long story short, I have made that doc available for free here on my channel. If you have been entertained at all by my work, would you give the trailer a try? If it's not your cup of tea, all good, but if it is, please check out the whole movie.

Thanks! -Alan 🤘🏻🍻

Anyone know the backstory? Not your typical image of Neil Peart. Usually the quiet, disciplined perfectionist behind the kit, here he looks like he's cutting loose. This past week I dropped a new Neil Peart mini-documentary https://youtu.be/qEpHsKZbEwE

Even the President couldn’t stop Steve McQueen from dancing with his daughter.
That’s 17-year-old Luci Baines Johnson doing the Watusi with the King of Cool himself.

But that’s just who McQueen was.
And in Bullitt, he took all that quiet swagger and channeled it into one of the most stripped-down, badass performances in movie history.

Quentin Tarantino said it best:
“As pure cinema, it’s one of the best-directed movies ever made.”

My new video breaks it all down — Bullitt, McQueen, the chase scene, and what makes this film such a cinematic landmark.

🎬 NEW VIDEO: Quentin Tarantino on Steve McQueen's Bullitt.

He breaks down the iconic film:
• McQueen vs. Newman
• Why Steve finally said yes
• A cop movie that ignored the plot
• And the chase that changed cinema
